Heres one for you all, on a friday night.
on wedsnesday, our old apprentice who now has been S/E for 10yrs now rang us urgently for help.
I won,t give you the firm but he,s working for a big major player in the defence of the country, a major player, whome are to do with aircraft and the like, guessed?
However scenario is, they are stripping swa cables out of a switch rm to refurb some offices, these cables range from 16mm 4c--- 70mm 4c and they go under a small duct, his 2x electricians some how managed to cut through a live 200a 70mm 4c cable, although very lucky and not hurt, it blew the air breaker in the sub, thats what happened but it by-passed the 2 sets of hrc fuses it SHOULD HAVE TOOK.
Now the Question is although they cut this cable, it should have taken the 1st set of hrc fuses, AGREED, however due to the air breaker calibration being wrong, this inturn downed the whole sight, and inturn at ÂŁ36,000 per hr down time they were not happy chappies, however do any of you think our old compardray has a case about the settings being wrong in the 1st place if this scenario becomes a legal issue, YOUR THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS PLEASE.

That's a hard 1 to call johnny. They could say that it was incompitance that these guys cut a live cable regardless of the incorrect ACB settings.

Yeah i think the fact it happened will be centre stage even before they go into those sort of details about what should have/didnt happen

You might struggle to get around that point, especially when it turns legal.

Yes agreed, incompetence is right, but if there technical procedures of planned maintenance says that those hrc fuses should have blown before the air breaker which was set wrong, although the lads were in the wrong in the off, isn,t there some come back you would think for our old apprentice if it came down the legal road, as he does think they are going to go for some compensation and at 36k hr thats some money.

Yes i agree that the 1st overcurrent device upsteam should be the 1st to disconnect but if it goes to court it is a blame game.

Who can prove the actual settings of the ACB when the incident happened?

The easiest thing to prove is that someone cut the cable.

Sorry for negative response mate.

Without sounding harsh its like driving straight into a brick wall and then saying the airbag should have gone off.

The airbag is there as protection in case you accidently hit the wall, but the real responsibility for safety lies with the driver, who should do everything in their power to avoid the collision.

Im talking out of my a** again arent i?

No yer not though mate, i understand what you are saying there, luckily there electrical maintenance fella was with him when he went into the sub-station as he had to sign for the keys out of the lodge, and it was the matt realised the air breaker was not set right, and also he luckily has had experience on setting these air breakers as well on a previous job in Basingstoke, so he new what he was looking at.
My personal thoughts are no 1, we could have been going to a funeral next week, luckily we arn,t and 2x although its obvious you check with either a hired cat scan or be dammed sure thats the one by physically tracing it, as what seemed to have happened the cpc,s had been cable tied to wrong cables and as one lad pulled it through the duct for other to see it moved as it had the wrong cpc tied to it and boom.

Remember the air breaker protecting the entire site may have been fully loaded at the time of the cut whereas the HRC closest to the cut may not have had any load on it at all. Full load plus the fault current could be why it tripped before the HRC.
