who to choose

I am currently starting my own electrical business. As this is early days I do not have enough custom for a monday to friday trade so am trying to get work for the weekend. I am a fully qualified electrician having served a four year apprenticeship, have the 17th edition qualification and 2391. I am keen to take up a plumbing course so I can offer this service to and maybe in the distant future undertake a gas course. With all this in mind what organisation would be better to register to: NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA.

Thanks fellow sparks

Who do you think your main clients will be? Joe Public probably won't mind (I'd suggest ELECSA for that, but I may be biased), however, if you intend to do any work for insurance companies/councils a lot of them still specify NICEIC.

Relatively cheap and online notification for jobs. Not quite so well known which can be a downside, however joe public still doesn't know much about notification and part pee in general, so not to much of an inhibitor. They also have an MCS certification scheme. Most site work will look for NICEIC as well atm.

Can I ask why the additional plumbing course? I'd have thought starting out one ought to stick to one aspect of the trade and get good at it. Besides, the electrical industry has in latter times become so vast that it has become difficult for electricians to cover all aspects. We'll probably very soon see the electrical industry segmented into smaller areas, be it domestic, commercial, industrial or the modern renewables. Just some thoughts.

Id have to agree with sparks 114 here. With the time and money youd spend getting other courses youd be better off flyering and promoting and setting a good solid foundation for your sparky business. Work on getting jobs, regular customers, and folk who can trust you and your company. Let people know you are there, it's summer time, how many of your mates/mates neighbours got decking? "It's looks great with lights mate and your misses will love it!" and "it's best to get those security lights/panel heaters/storage heaters etc etc etc fixed/checked before the winter!" "Look at all those extension leads and 4ways, you could be doing with more sockets!"

not because people dont need it, but because they've not thought about it yet :) good luck.
