Why cant I use this lighting arrangement ......

Young college lad who lives near me and who I occassionally give the benefit of my "knowledge and experience" to, presented me with this and asked me why he couldn't use it in a house circuit -- I guess he's been shown/taught it or something at college and was testing out my knowledge in the hope of getting one over on me!. Being the consumate professional I told him of course I knew why, but would take it away just to confirm with some more "experienced electricians" that there weren't any other additional reasons to the ones I knew and would let him know.

Clearly I knew the answer straight away (says he lying thro' his teeth) but eventually sussed it out ....... strange how you actually know the answer to something because you always do it but because its not in the environment you're used to it takes longer to get to that answer!

Edited version of what he gave me below. Any takers who can't get it straight away or am I truely amongst the electrical gods on this forum

I cant quite understand what you want, but presumably the 3 connections at top and bottom are 2 way switches, so you'd be switching the neutral, which isn't allowed without switching the Line at the same time.
Basically, the lamp will be off, but it will still have a Line connector live to it, through the lamp filament, all the way to the other switch.

I used to work with a marine sparks who used to wire his switches something like that - he preferred it to crimping the negs together in the switch box.
OK it was 24v dc but I'm still not a fan of that method.

Took me a couple of mins my first thought was a neutral at a two way switch that want work !!!, then I got it but if you used BC light bulb, how would you mark the the live and neutral for identification? It would of took me for ever to work out what was going on if this was in an installation, I have never come across this set up and would of been convince that there would be a dead short if the switches were in a certain position.
