WHY IS IT? Are there to many regs.

As a newbie when there is a question on Electrics on this forum there seem to be a lot of contraindicating answers is there know to many regs and to many interpretations that electricians are getting confused Is this a safe thing Ive read posts where 3-4 people are not sure and giving deferent answers Help

Its a bit like the Law. We have judges and barristers that appeal and counter appeal on "interpretations " of law. 10 people can read the same sentence and all have different understandings of what it said. I think its done to keep the common man down. Its written by the sort of people who have degrees etc .. Bit cynical ???

Ive got the Requirements for electrical installations BS 7671 17th edition beside me and never go to bed with out reading a chapter and what a great read it is But can it be read and interpolated in so many different ways?. I'm only a Junior Member go ease's on me.

The regulations are constantly changing due to external affects.

Things like harmonization, part P, micro generation etc..


We've had a lot more different opinions in recent years due to the fact that there are more than one brand of electrician these days, so for us to all follow the guidance of one book can tend to create differences of opinion.

There are occasions where the regulations contradict itself, and so it's no wonder we are having the first amendment so soon.

Positive charged protons and negative electrons produce a neutral charge.. Schoolboy physics.
Electrons are negativly charged Particles NOT atoms.

Hi shocking,

As you say there are so many regs, but this is hardly surprising as the jobs we do are really quite complex. I guess the best way to look at is that provided you have complied with the safety aspect, then you should be ok. There are a lot of good books out there which do help clarify what BS7671 is saying and this can help.

In truth it would appear that it is only when something happens that the regs are challenged by the laws. We use the regs as a defence in that if we have complied then we are working correctly so this is why people can be very picky on how close they work or install to the regs.

I used to teach short and full courses in BS7671 and was always amazed on how the same regulation could be looked at in so many ways. The best advice I can give is dont lose any sleep, just keep in there and hopefully making a good living.
