before they decide the outside light needs fixed? ''O it hasn't worked for about 4 months but we need it now because the steps are slippery''. Didn't even offer a coffee.

Its work yer big girls blouse ...man up and be glad you got work coming in....... could be worse you could be a proctologist; then your days would be full of Asses.:uhoh2::-------:

I get that as well, winter and its loads of outside lights and armoured to bury, summer and its all inside up in the toasting attics.

dont be jealous but, we do a bit of labouring for builders in the summer in the nice weather.

then in the winter we are in a nice warm boilerhouse/plantroom

yeah but combine the cold with coffees and you're then forever making yellow snow.

Whats that about then? Sparks labouring for builders? Usually the other way round here :)
work slows down a little for us in the summer so we end up doing a house up/building one and wiring it.

yeah the builders are working for our boss , if work starts to go slack the boss buys some land or a house to keep up busy

Not bad at all then really, bit more variety and learning other skills at the same time.

Happens to me every bloody year mate. Suck it up and get used to it. :)
I've had 2 os lighting jobs this week.

Used to do loads of work on schools, was always the same then, once the clocks changed at the end of october the amount pf car park lights not working used to increse no end.the biggest problem was SONs that had filled full of water, as soon as you opened it you got drenched somalways had a spare set or 3 of clothes on the van.

no waterproofs?

i would have worn a lightweight waterproof with plastic overtrousers.

(put gloves over coat or it will run down your sleeves)

I always go overkill on water... yup things are gounded, isolated yada yada... but at the end of the day... if you sort out the electrocution... the cold or damp will get you... if you pay £200-£300 a month on booze easy like most sparks I know... save it one month and buy the best ya can or multiples of that keep ya safe dry n warm for yrs... providing the supply is off n no storm in the area that is... lol..or doh!!

Sorted! :-)

Always the way. Tomorrow I'm putting 10m of SWA in a trench, and Saturday im outdoors again installing that EV charger.

The cost of a excavating a trench goes up when the ground is frozen. That's standard contractor costing for any excavation works, be it for plumbers service pipework or electrical services work etc, where the ground is frozen....

Get a grip Eng, we're talking Leicestershire here, not the dizzy heights of the Lakes or Scottish Highlands! :-)

frozen ground is frozen ground no matter where it's located!! Would you undertake digging a trench 10m X 60cm working for the same cost as normal??

I agree. I try to top load the price for digging. I'm no navy. People soon find someone cheaper and you avoid the issue of hitting services.

I was was pricing for a board change and 2 new circuits last winter at a holiday home. Owner happened to be there and as I'm about to leave asked if I would put up an outside light as the existing had corroded through. There were gales outside and you could hardly stand. Told them In no uncertain terms I wasn't going to risk it. Also pointed out that I'd flagged up to the property manager 2 years before that the light wasn't working. It hadn't become suddenly urgent!

It wasn't just the snow and cold, I have the outdoor gear. It was the fact that it was 45 mins drive in the wrong direction, and I went between other jobs as they said they were old and the wife's eye sight wasn't very good. You don't have to drink the coffee , but it would have been nice to be asked. After all I was doing them a favor by going there the same day they called.

Pretty jealous of this. Getting bored of domestic electrical work fast at the moment and i would love to get into house renovation!

Changes are necessary ... otherwise the boredom will hinder your progress pretty badly... and you wouldnt want that.....
