Why leads should be unravelled.

Just had to strip this out. it was plugged into a 13a socket and supplying a chip pan fryer which was rated at 2Kw Unfortunatly it was nicly rolled onto the spool and the magnetic effects built up a lot of heat.

Seen it at a house I was at. Wallpaper stripper being used then all of a sudden the RCDs tripped.

More to the point, it was my extension she had decide to use.

lol Mark Had nearly the same in a store when I Unrolled the extension walked past later to find the manager rolling it up I told him my reasons he then said Someone could trip over it I unplugged it n took out the fuse

Good picture.something like that would be useful to teach the unknowing general population of these dangers

It would make good publicity for an extension lead that could only reveal the plug when its fully unwound

i unwound one in a club i used to work in the manager said stop being daft they don`t need unwinding before you use them. couple of days later he was out buying a new one. i told him not to unwind it you don`t need to!!
a little humble pie was thrown his way

I have seen it happen to a coiled up length of 16A artic blue, they had two cooking appliances and a freezer on it (at an oyster festival). I had warned them, and I actually made them beg for a replacement (they couldn't of traded with out power)

Had the same issue at a site in London. Two Oz chippy / builders, using 1 rolled extension cable. They had a Heat gun and a wall paper stripper both going off the same reel. There was a nice shimmer effect going on when I walked in and turned it off. The whole thing was melted together and no longer usable.

Had the same thing with a decorator he had sent his two lads off on a job stripping paint off a garden gate, they phoned up and said they couldn't carry on as the power had gone out. Decorator went to investigate then came back with the extension lead gave it to me and said when you get five minutes could you sort it out, I ask him what had been plugged into it and whether it had been unwound, turns out they had 2 heat guns plugged in with it wound up. the entire reel was just one solid lump of melted cable you couldn't even unwind it a turn. Idiots one of the lads is now training as a sparks god help us

Most of them are printed with the maximum current carrying capaity if rolled up, or at least they should be. Mine clearly states 720W if rolled up, 2400W if fully unrolled. Manufacturers MUST take the blame if they don't provide adequate warning.
