I have a champion 7500 electric start Genny, model no 100463 that I bought second hand. I was told it was gently used but have since noticed that it has been tinkered with. My question of the day is;
When I plug into the 20 amp outlets, I have to turn the 30 amp breaker on to be able to use the 20 amp outlets. I was told this is irregular. Is it and if so, how do I rectify this issue

The circuit indicates that, for each circuit, the 30A breaker is in series with the 20A breaker. Therefore it seems they both have to be on, and that's a design feature. As above, don't believe what you were told! 🤪

As per the schematic, the 30A breaker is an overall one that protects the alternator from overload from all outlets combined. Then the 20A breaker protects the 20A outlets and anything plugged in to them. If the breakers were independent then you could draw a total of 50A and overload the alternator.

You really can’t modify your generator because it will probably cause more problems than you already have. You are taking a big chance when you buy used equipment. If it was me I would just leave it the way it is and just turn off the 30 amp switch or unplug your generator.
