Wi-Fi Extender socket

Hi All,

customer has asked for wifi extender sockets to be installed (like this British General 900 Series 13A 2-Gang SP Switched Wi-Fi Extender Socket + 2.1A 1-Outlet USB Charger White - https://www.screwfix.com/p/british-general-900-series-13a-2-gang-sp-switched-wi-fi-extender-socket-2-1a-1-outlet-usb-charger-white/8865v ) has anyone fitted these, or found anything from another brand as it seems BG and LAP are the only ones i can find.

Never used BG stuff very much, but apparently a lot of people don't rate it?

just looking for opinions on BG stuff and any experiences anyone has with these extender sockets before I get back to the customer.

BG aren’t too bad in my opinion. Never used their Wi-fi booster socket though.

Get customer to supply them, that way you’re not liable for warranty if they don’t work. Their choice of accessory.

I would think they need a deep box. The deeper the better.

Never really used BG stuff myself so was just after opinions as they seem to get a fair amount of bad press on various forums.

Hadn't thought of getting them to supply them, but my worry was them coming back to me if they don't work, or aren't as good as they expect.

Thinking probably 35mm boxes. was just also wandering if anyone has used them, how effective they were, compared to POE type extenders.

Never used one but would be interested to see how well it work. The Screwfix info suggests they are OK with 25mm deep boxes but I guess you will find out.

You can be pretty sure they have significant limitations compared to any sort of professional wired WiFi network. That might seem an oxymoron, but often you have multiple WiFi points off a wired network to get reliable coverage throughout a building, but usually they are cooperative/centrally managed and not just stand-alone things.

Good to know thanks @telectrix. Thats the crucial thing i wanted to know, others have said BG is alright, but the WIFI extender was the crucial thing thanks!

We have BG accessories in Kitchen and Utility as it was the only range I could find with grey inserts. No issues with switches and sockets, but I briefly tried one of their wifi extenders and was less than impressed.

Despite being located close to router, it continually dropped connection and was a real pain in the backside. Reviews seem to generally be favourable, so I might have been unlucky.

Agree with ung, use a decent plug in one. You can then experiment with it in different positions in the house. Try using it in between your router and the area you need better signal. Not directly next to the router.

I tried Wi-Fi extender sockets in my house a couple of years ago, they just didn't work, the only help the supplier gave was to tell me to make sure they were on the same circuit.

Then they must use powerline technology to talk to each other, not a proper wifi mesh.
