Due to test a new circuit tomorrow that incorporates a Grasslin socket box timer (no part number is on the literature that came with it). Can I do an insulation resistance test @ 500V with the timer still in circuit? I think this is a mechanical device so 'should' be ok but would like some confirmation this is correct, or not as the case may be.

Just connect Phase/Neutral together and test against earth, perfectly acceptable.

In that case, remember to put down these as limitations. As the limitations are 'agreed' limitations, you should inform the client prior to carrying out the test.

Indeed, it just tends to be the norm on PIR's, put it down as a limitation, along with burried cables, underfloors, loft spaces blah blah blah

Just disconnect it then, it probably will take it but you wont get a good reading I wouldn't of thought it would be above 1Mohm so you may as well disconnect it.

Reg 612.3.2 does state that if you feel that doing an insulation test on a circuit verification, and you feel that there is an item of equipment that will be damaged by a 500volt test, then it is acceptable to reduce the test voltage to 250v but the value should still remain as 1Mohm.

So no need to even to deviate from the BS 7671-2008 and do a 250v test.
