I am about to put up a new light fitting, thge colours from the ceiling are blue, black and green/yellow, I know the green/yellow is earth and I am thinking the blue is neutral and the black live, is this correct? The colours on the new fitting are blue and brown.
Thanks for any help.

Have you got a nice little choc block pushed up into the celing by any chance.

As it's a light and providing your not fittng an edison E27 lamp as the y/g goes with the earth, it's not that critcal where the other 2 go. I would though see where that black goes as it's not a regular colour associated with single phase installations.

SS, the wires are all separate.
Malcolm, no there is no block in the ceiling, ive put up many fittings but this has me baffled.

only way is isolate, connect meter across black and blue. turn on power and light switch, see if you get 230v. isolate again and repeat for black to green/yellow. should get 230v. if so, the the black is switched live. fit brown sleeve and fit light. ( after isolating again, of course.)

Is this in conduit? as what you have there is in old money Blue phase and Balck Neutral.
could it be 2 way, and part of a 3core cable at the fitting? check voltage from each ( blue and black) to cpc.

Sorry for the really simple question, but I take it the old lighting fitting worked ok? When you took it down did you make note of which wire was where?

That's what I was thinking.
Best way would be to have a look in the switch.

Is this a polyphase installation? Do other light fittings and/or sockets have yellow, black and green & yellow wires?
