Just a quick question..... I am replacing a freestanding cooker with single oven and grill with a freestanding double oven. The original cooker was wired in by a professional and is a 10.8kw. The new double oven cooker is 10.9kw, can i use the original wiring safely? There have been no problems with the original cooker and wiring to date.

Many thanks

Hold on! What about diversity, not all elements will be on at the same time!

With cookers its the first 10A and 30% of the remainder, so with a a 10.9kW cooker, as stated its 48A, so the 1st 10A + 30% of 38A which gives 23A - so a 32A supply is more than adequate.

See OSG page 96.

yes...

Thankyou PC electrics for my kind of answer, simple and straight to the point! For you others who answered me don't get me wrong i am grateful for your reply but it has gone way way over my simple head!! :) I thought it may be ok as i didnt think that 100w difference would be enough to worry about but as i said before i am but a mere simpleton unlike you very clever guys!!! If i look on my consumer unit will it say if it is a 50a fuse?

Put one of these cookers on full blast, with all and any elements you wish, measure the current taken, and I think you will find the diversity figures are much more accurate than assuming the current being drawn by stated KW rating

eg
An element will consume as it hots up,then off and on, consuming enough only to maintain a temperature
Invite the whole family to christmas dinner and eat and be merry and concern he not

As yellowvanman says, you will only need a 32A circuit.

I am in between two rocks at present! Installed are a Neff double (4.5kW?) and a JL Hob (6.5kW?) both installed by John Lewis and certificated, 6mm MCB 32A. With kitchen alterations coming up, my electrician (NICEIC PartP) say that these two need independent circuits each with 45A, in contrast to the present set up in which the two cables are united in a Junction box before proceeding to the Consumer unit. JL appear happy that their installation is sound. I knwo that diversity is a factor but can anyone tell me how to find the appropriate Regs?

Thanks

OK , as a previous post, diversity rules apply. you have 11kWatts in total. that equates to 48A rating. the calculation is 10A + ( 30% of remainder) + 5A if the isolator has a socket outlet. this give you 10A + 11.4A + 5A = 26.4A as a worst case, so a 32A MCB with a 6mm cable is fine.

Your Part Pee electrician is talking total rubbish!! (another Electrical Trainee that hasn't a clue) The existing 6mm cable protected by a 32A MCB is suitable for cooker appliances up to 15KW!! At a guess i'd say that in excess of 90% of all households in the UK have exactly the same set up, and have done for over 60 years. lol!! From the sound of it the existing appliance wiring connect to the cooker control unit via a made for purpose twin connection unit under the worktop, which is the correct connection method!!

The diversity rule does apply, and should be applied where necessary by the electrician. (equation stated above)

But to put it in layman's terms for you for future reference - anything up to 15kw is suitable on 30A/32A in 6mm. framcastle, Remember that for future reference :) (a cooker greater than 15kW is extremley unlikley in a domestic property)

Common knowledge, so how you're electrician said anything different is completley beyond me.

allowing for diversity a 32 amp supply will be fine for them both, but remember, the cable needs to be adequate to cope with a load on up to that...
