Hey everyone, hope you all had a good xmas.
Got called around to change over an old style pin type thermostat to a hive one for a family member. (Curse the holidays lol) and was a bit confused when I took the old one off the wall and saw how it was wired. I said just to get a central heating guy round to do it, as I don't have much experience doing heating systems.
I'm posting this to hopefully learn how it is wired just for the future.

There is a link to see how the old one is wired.
The current heating is an Oil Boiler and when it's switched on it does the hot tank and heats the rads.
What threw me is the orange link cable between the red and the blue which goes out on the black cable. I'm guessing it can't be linking out Line and Neutral, as that wouldn't work and that the black is actually a SW or is doing something. But surely the timeclock needs a neutral of some kind. I've tried doing some research but can't find anything online.
Also that hive is a dual channel and this system would need a single channel? Would I be correct in saying that?
Edit: Also, normally I would have a go and try to figure things out. But I really didn't want to leave them without heating in this weather ovbs.
