Hello,

I need to fit a lighting fitting that has two silver wires running out of the fixture, they are not labelled or coloured. The current fixture in the ceiling also has two wires, one is brown and the other blue.

I have attached an image of the current fixture and wires connected and also an image of the new fixture wire.

- Do I just release the existing brown and blue cables and insert the new cables in either socket?
- Does it matter which cable I put where in the ceiling unit?

Many thanks,

James

Welcome to the forum, I approved your post for speed of response in the general forum, Admin' may relocate and give you DIY access when they have sobered up and are nxt on line :).

Cane you show a picture of the whole fitting, especially the lamp holder part. Thankyou.

As Darkwood said. Issue with most of these fittings, is mounting it over the original ceiling rose. You might need to put the house wiring in a junction box. Unless your competent, might be best to get an electrician in to do it for you.

Thanks Darkwood and Midwest,

I have attached a few pictures that may be of help. I was hoping I could insert the silver wires into the existing junction box, in he same two slots where the existing fixture wires are going into, but I'm not that confident in what is the correct procedure, or if it matters which wire goes into which slot.

Thanks.

Dosnt really matter

Light its just a element in and out, If its a screw in Bulb the rule is whatever cable links to the middle is the LIVE ie RED in your case Brown now.

Yeah polarity probably won't matter, as Duane said usually centre pin is live, so could always bell it out and have the middle pin wire as live, just make sure your connections are secure and you have checked that power is off working.

The regulations require that the centre pin of an ES lampholder be connected to line, and the outer contact to neutral, so yes it does matter.

im not keen on the look myself.

I would sooner see some thing like a load of People (Borrowers) on top of the Light, Chain to hold the Light up and the Cables been made to look like a rope ladder.

Think it would be more fun than a bird all in white with a hole in its side and cable coming out.

MATTER dark or non dark MATTER
if you read all the WORDs that is in the statement above you will see it starts to talk about SCREW Bulbs, that the LIVE is in the MIDDLE Pin.

As the others have said, and you should be able to use the cable strain loops, as per the original lampholder & flex, as long as the new fitting is not too heavy, is that all there is to the light fitting, we see in your pics? Interesting luminaire, if you don't mind me saying!
