Hi all,

i have the the old red and black cable throughout my house. I see there is a date stamp on the consumer unit stating 1991 for the install. All I would like to know is can I get a new consumer unit that would allow me to get new kitchen ring, cooker and associated sockets installed without a rewire??

I have recently removed one socket in the small room and put two new sockets in. I have kept the ring in place for continuity. Would it be worth doing this trough tout the house as I move from upstairs to downstairs remodelling?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Unless you've got money to burn I would only replace the cabling if the additions warranted it or if it failed circuit tests.

What's wrong with the original one do?
Just get the installation checked.

I hope you're not a DIY'er if you're thinking of changing your Existing CU?? Pretty sure this thread should be in the DIY Section!!

Agree with Engineer on this one it needs moving to diy section, then we can all offer better advice. Nick if your not an electrician then you need to get a qualified spark in to carry out an EICR on your property 1st to highlight any problems and to find out if any remedial work needs carrying out in relationship to the cu change and addition of any new circuits.

As stated above. Are you an electrician or DIY? If DIY then this needs to be moved to the DIY section.
Who said that you need a whole new rewire for your kitchen?

What I would like to know is what type of "trough tout" are you displaying as you "move from upstairs to downstairs while your modelling" ?

I was taught to always display pursed lips with slightly bent knees while moving upstairs and the opposite when coming down, although depends on whether its Pierre Cardin or Ralph Lauren. You could try a "rough trout look" it doesn't smell as good, but hell what a look........God I must be bored, just couldn't resist.

Hey, but that's part of the look, think Max Wall crossed with Skippy the bush kangaroo and your there. Weren't you taught this, its pretty basic stuff.

What, you went to the famous Eton school of modelling in Ogglethorpe? You lucky Spoon.

Predictive text, does cause issues.

yes this is DIY. From what I understand if I want a new consumer unit if the current work isn't to today's regs then everything needs changing??

I think I will get someone local round to have a check of what we have and how to move forward. I am unsure this forum can help. Thanks all.

We can help if you let us know what you are after and tell us the whole story. Why do you want to change your CU? Who has told you that you need a new one? Is it just because of the new kitchen?
If you need a local guy then im sure someone on this forum will be able local to you.

Translastion, i've not got the answer's that i want and it's suddenly dawning on me that i wont be able to do it myself.

We can try help on a public forum, but there isn't an answer on here that's 100% accurate, because without being on site it's just guess work.

Call an electrician, get him to inspect the install, agree your limitations with him and crack on. If you're wanting to be hands on then that's fine, most sparks will let you dig and run cables for them under there supervision if you're wanting to get the install moved on.

Get several electricians to look and compare quotes, before commencing on any work though.
