Hi all. Just been to a house and some cowboy electrican had fed the pond unit which controls the pump, filter and 4 lights with a 1.0mm twin and earth cable coming off the ring main. I told the landlord he needs to get this sorted and he asked me to do it for him. There is no space left in the consumer unit so i was just wondering is it ok to spur down off the ring main, then cable back entry through the wall to a outdoor enclosure consisting of a RCD , the a 1.5 SWA cable from there to the pond unit.
I'm guessing a 1.5 mm cable is suffficent with a 5 amp rcd. Does anyone know any different?

Thanks in advance.

Gaz,
How about spur of the ring main as you mention, into a switched fused RCD spur (with a 5amp fuse). And then flex out from the spur into a wago adaptable box through the wall.
From there you can make off your 1.5 swa in the box ( wago do kits for this ) and down to the pond unit.
Hope this helps,
Sav

Its the old type cu with the rewireable fuses. Prob needs an upgrade but i dont think the tennant will go for that yet.

Thanks about the wago advice , i'll check those out

Some cowboy electrician?,i take it you mean someone who was not by any means a qualified electrician, just someone posing as one, wonder if its the same chap who charged ÂŁ950 for a shower cable install, anyway,is the exisiting main earthing and bonding arrangement sufficient?.this would be a part p notify job so may take a bit longer than expected

its a tn-s system and everything seems to be good regarding the earthing. Its due for a periodic inspection soon anyway

I think it would be cheaper to use a weatherproof cu which comes with a rcd in it . Theyre about ÂŁ20
The switched rcd spurs alone are about ÂŁ40 and then i need a wago box or something like it.

So no-one see's any problem with coming off the ring then?
