Hello to all members of this forum. It is nice to have a valuable resource like this to hand when the need arises.

I am a 28 year old guy living in a modern-ish 3 bed semi detached house in Leicester with my wife and 2 children. I sell shoes for a living so have little/no clue about anything electrical.

Anyway, after much nagging from the wife i finally decided to remove an old looking chandelier and replace with a modern light fitting from Ikea.

All seemed pretty straight forward until screwed it all back up and switched the trip switch back on to get the power. The light came on ok but it stays on and when switching off from the wall switch nothing happens. It just stays on.

Anyway, the wiring coming from the ceiling looks a little messy at best and i have seperated all the wires for the purposes of the picture. Hit with a new problem... now i have seperated all the wires, the hall and landing lights do not come on at all.

Hence i need help/advice as to what i should be doing? How should i be wiring this back up so:

a) the new light fitting works properly

and

b) the hall and landing lights both work?

I hope this is not too much trouble for someone to help me out with.

With kind regards

first of all, turn the power off via the main switch to the board. If you have access to a multimeter set it to the omega symbol (ohms).

seperate the three cables (the grey cables), now ask your wife to press the appriopriate switch on and off, while you test between the black wire and the red wire in each cable. when you findthe cable that gives you a reading when she has turned the switch on, and no reading when its off, then that is your switch wire.
the red from this cable must be connected to the other reds. the black wire from this cable must be taped or sleeved brown, and conected to the brown of your light.
the other black wires must be onnected to the blue wire of your light. The bare wires with the green/yellow sleevibg must be connected to the earth terminal of yourlight.

If you have trouble following this, then you will need to call an electrician.

Seff what you have done is a classic DIYers mistake, you have confused the feeds in, out and to the switch at the fitting. Best advice is for you to get a qualified electrician in, it's fairly simple to put right and won't cost you silly money. Post up your rough location and I'm sure there'll be a member near you who will come and help.
If you try to put this right yourself I'm afraid you could be opening a can of worms that you won't be able to cope with.

Allways a good thing to keep when you buy any switches is the little electrical diagrams that come with the switch,
may just get you out the sh*t if some think like this happens again.

And if you can follow the above post you should be ok,other than that get a local spark in should be to expensive.

Hi Guys,

Wow that was quick to get a response, impressive and thank you for taking the time to write back.

I do understand the explanation given by johnboy - however i would rather a local sparky come in and sort it for me.

I am located at LE5 2GF.

If there is anybody out there who could pop in one morning and sort it for me i would be most greatful.

Isn't that a bit complicated when a twin red is involved ? Always test though.
