Hi,

I am replacing some old halogen fittings with pendant light fittings in my front room. There are two fittings that are operated from two switches. When I took off the old fittings, the arrangement was so dissimilar to the guidance I had that I did not take a note of the layout and proceeded to follow the instructions. However I had a spare wire! After researching, it looks like one of the fittings has two 2-core and earth cables and a 3-core and earth cable, the other has one of each.

Can anybody advise how the wires should be arranged in the fitting? The wire colours are:

2-core and earth - Red, Black and Earth
3-core and earth - Red, Blue, Yellow and Earth.

I'm at a loss as, whenever I try at the moment, the switches in the front room no longer work and the light switch in the kitchen now operates the front room while the kitchen lights do not work at all!!

Cheers
David

Cant believe such an unambiguous post by what sounds like an honest diy'er who made a mistake has got more posts taking the **** and sniping than helpful ones.

Could have been resolved in maybe 3 or 4 posts and the guy would have had the job done and been happy. Instead he's probably thinking that half the sparkies on here are patronising and extremely unhelpful.

Maybe this is why he had a go on his own and why some people are struggling for work!!!!!!

Good god people take things seriously, I was having a laugh I realy realy feel sorry if I have hurt anybodies feelings especialy the guy that hasn't got any landing lights and the guy in the hospital.
I beleive this site should help this person with his problem however this person should also realise that this site continualy gets asked for help from people who should of called out an electrician in the first place.
There are domestic electricians on this site who get called out to jobs like this all the time and get payed for the knowledge and training they have spent years achieving, as in any other job ie heart surgeon.
Me personaly don't care I just like taking the **** lol

the red/yellow/blue is for 2 way switching. without seeing the job. it's impossible to advise. honestly, it's time to call in an expert to sort it out. i.m not just saying this, but it's going to take you ages trial and error and could even cause danger to you and yours. a good sparks can sort it out in an hour.

In this case, this advice is as good as it gets. You will need a minimum of a multimeter and a knowledge of the various ways of wiring lighting up. Not rocket science admittedly. all weekend and burnt fingers for you or about an hour or so for an Electrician. I would charge you about ÂŁ40 and a brew for this job if you are/were local. so as you can see its not an expensive job to sort out.

Cheers.......Howard

sounds like the three core is the switch cable , red / brown will feed the switch (common) yellow/black and blue/grey will be the return .
one will do the first light and the other will switch the second which has been joined at the first fitting.
If this means nothing as in double Dutch then you really best to get a sparks to sort it mate .
