Hi,

I am replacing some old halogen fittings with pendant light fittings in my front room. There are two fittings that are operated from two switches. When I took off the old fittings, the arrangement was so dissimilar to the guidance I had that I did not take a note of the layout and proceeded to follow the instructions. However I had a spare wire! After researching, it looks like one of the fittings has two 2-core and earth cables and a 3-core and earth cable, the other has one of each.

Can anybody advise how the wires should be arranged in the fitting? The wire colours are:

2-core and earth - Red, Black and Earth
3-core and earth - Red, Blue, Yellow and Earth.

I'm at a loss as, whenever I try at the moment, the switches in the front room no longer work and the light switch in the kitchen now operates the front room while the kitchen lights do not work at all!!

Cheers
David

the red/yellow/blue is for 2 way switching. without seeing the job. it's impossible to advise. honestly, it's time to call in an expert to sort it out. i.m not just saying this, but it's going to take you ages trial and error and could even cause danger to you and yours. a good sparks can sort it out in an hour.

SMB - difficult to tell from your username to be honest!

oldtimer - I'll get a picture up when I get home from work this evening, hopefully that will help.

ukpablo - "thanks" for your insight. I look forward to your dissertation on living an entire life without ever having tried anything new and needing assistance from a more knowledgeable community. I have to wonder how full your day/life is that you can trawl this site looking for opportunities to belittle and undermine people. I already know that I've bitten off more than I can chew but it was worth a go.

oh come on, get a sense of humour!!!!
Do u not think that messing with electric when u have little knowledge is just a bit dangerous??!!!
if u dont kill urself, u could well burn ur house down!
Like i said, there is sometimes a bit more to it than u think to just replacing a light fitting!
Good luck all the same, and if i offended u than i apologise.

pablo. give the guy a break. he's had a go, realised he's out of his depth and come for advice.

don't think offence was taken mate, certainly not by me. just think the guy don't need shooting down in flames. some of 'em do, those that won't listen. esp. the DIYers that want to rewire a kitchen by picking our brains. it's amazing some will spend £oodles on a nice new shiny kitchen/bathroom then want the electrics installing for next to nowt.

i know bud, re-read his post after his comment, felt bad for the guy, so duly apologised, i dont mean to offend but alot of people as u said come on here for quick fix advice after trying to mess with things that they do not understand. I hope the guy gets it sorted and i will choose who i rib next time in a post!!..............honest:-) lol

Apology accepted Pablo and thanks telectrix! I am happy to admit I underestimated what was involved - I had done a similar change in my daughter's bedroom quite easily but that was only one light with a single switch and I didn't appreciate there would be a difference. I'll hopefully be able to get a picture on here later.

Cant believe such an unambiguous post by what sounds like an honest diy'er who made a mistake has got more posts taking the **** and sniping than helpful ones.

Could have been resolved in maybe 3 or 4 posts and the guy would have had the job done and been happy. Instead he's probably thinking that half the sparkies on here are patronising and extremely unhelpful.

Maybe this is why he had a go on his own and why some people are struggling for work!!!!!!

Good god people take things seriously, I was having a laugh I realy realy feel sorry if I have hurt anybodies feelings especialy the guy that hasn't got any landing lights and the guy in the hospital.
I beleive this site should help this person with his problem however this person should also realise that this site continualy gets asked for help from people who should of called out an electrician in the first place.
There are domestic electricians on this site who get called out to jobs like this all the time and get payed for the knowledge and training they have spent years achieving, as in any other job ie heart surgeon.
Me personaly don't care I just like taking the **** lol

Got it sorted with a bit of information from other web sites, a £6 multimeter and no help whatsoever from this forum so you can all go **** yourselves!

In this case, this advice is as good as it gets. You will need a minimum of a multimeter and a knowledge of the various ways of wiring lighting up. Not rocket science admittedly. all weekend and burnt fingers for you or about an hour or so for an Electrician. I would charge you about £40 and a brew for this job if you are/were local. so as you can see its not an expensive job to sort out.

Cheers.......Howard

sounds like the three core is the switch cable , red / brown will feed the switch (common) yellow/black and blue/grey will be the return .
one will do the first light and the other will switch the second which has been joined at the first fitting.
If this means nothing as in double Dutch then you really best to get a sparks to sort it mate .

Thats the sort of help and advice we should be proud to give

Right peeps, this stops now!!!

The attitude of some of the elder members of late is borderline elitist.

Without new members we wouldn't have a forum and I for one will not see that happen. Just because you name is in red bold letters, doesn't make you immune from infractions & bans etc. I'm sure we all have a go at stuff outside of our usual area ourselves from time to time and mess up, myself included. Everyone deserves a bit of guidance even if it is 'contact an electrician'. Any further involvement in the thread is not needed.

If you have no useful information, say nothing or I will from now on take action.

Anyone with any issues please feel free to contact any of our administrators.

Sorry fellas but Lenny has made a valid point.

Now, take this however you want, but the next member to cause offence to anyone new or old on here will be banned...end of.

Yes, by all means have a laugh and a joke etc, but DO NOT abuse ANYONE asking for simple advice.

And, i am happy to accept PM's from any members who have a problem with this.
