Is it hard copy only or does the client require an editable digital file?

We were forced into Autocad due to specification but saying that, it's an amazing application and now we send and receive editable drawings and outlines quite routinely.

We also use AutoCAD but larger clients seem to be going more with parametric packages recently. If it's just schematics the AutoCAD is a sledge hammer to crack a wallnut. Try M1cr0s0ft Visio, it comes bundled with certain versions of Office and can import / export CAD formats like dwg and dxf. You could also try one of the free CAD offerings;
CADStandard will import, edit and export dxf's.
Open Office has a Draw module.
Blender can handle 2D and 3D CAD formats.
Solid Edge 2D is also free if you don't mind parting with you're life story first.
