Discuss Wiring the lights for a Three Storey Home in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Sorry for the delayed response, thought I had subscribed to the thread and it had not had any responses yet. Judging by the responses I clearly have the right forum. First off I am not an electrician. Hopefully that won't get me shunned right away. I am running wires and buying parts for my electrician to do all the final connections and testing.

As MDJ says, I am looking for basic level support. I have the flexibility to work to whatever wiring is suggested as the house is pretty much a shell at the moment. The switches are really what drew me here as I want all my switches to match throughout (even though they will probably be just white plastic. The Grid system is what my electrician mentioned, but he they talked about custom switches made up of blocks that would not match in. This was pretty much my reason to come on here and find out more.

actually mem can be taken apart and intermediates installed, buy a 3 gang 2 way switch for example and a 1 gang intermediate and you can take the switch out and alter it, there is a brass screw holding the switch in, mem will do the job
Click light switches are like that now too and just look standard when on the wall

If your electrician is doing the connections then he should be telling you what to run and where and then inspecting your work at each stage as you go before anything is covered up! Ask him to look at click or mem as Mdj suggested

Just write down what you need and then buy it. Grid switches would be the usual method, but as said you can create your own custom switches using MEM or apparently Click.

He is doing that, I just thought if I found a solution other than his grid switches I should have the full information. Looking on the Scolmore (Click) website and their modular definity range looks like it could be ideal, but also expensive. Will come up with a list and price it up. Thanks for the suggestions.

Switches are the bit you see and the easy bit. Get your sparky to specify EXACTLY what he needs as you'll struggle in B&Q

I have no intention of going to B&Q as I want to buy the right products at the right price. I have an account with my local wholesaler (Eyre and Ellinson in Liverpool are by my work).

Found that site as soon as I searched Click. Seem a good place to point my Spark too once I have a basket together.

Next question then. My spark will let me know how many twin and earth and three core and earth to run to and from each location. What switch modules do I use from that site for the switches that do the same function on two and three floors?

You'll be better off asking him/her what they want and where

Oh Sibeer. Your spark is advising you yet you come on asking how to carry this work out. If you're doing DIY electrics at least have the decency to be open and honest about it, we must get at least 3 of these "My electrician says" threads a month and we can see through them mate.

Are you sure, does he exist? You have an account with a wholesaler?

As I stated before, sit down with your spark and agree the shopping list.

If I was advising a client who wanted to save a few quid on how to do a job and found out he was going to an internet forum to second guess me I'd be mightily annoyed and the price would probably go up.

Well thanks for the accusation of lying Trev, sounds like you need to invest in a fresh pair of specs as you are barking up the wrong tree rather than seeing right through anything.

My spark is running on a day rate, not a job rate. As such (to my mind) it makes sense to research and solve things myself rather than add to his time and bill.

To give my full life story (given the accusations): I am changing two flats into a house as a conversion under building regs. Buying the other flat has taken me to the extremes of my finances so I am trying to control and understand costs wherever possible, which includes micromanaging the project. I run a factory for my day job with a large number of woodworking machines, hence why I have an account at the local wholesler to my work for all the odd parts we need.

Given I want to get this signed off by Building Control at the end I would be pretty optimistic to DIY the electrics.

Oh and Andy, if you could scan the smoke packet in that would be ace

"It works" and "it's safe" are not necessarily the same thing. With DIY work, they are often far from the same thing.
