Working weekends ADVICE NEEDED!

Hi, all

ive been an electrician for about 9 years now (including 4 year apprenticeship). I am going to be going to university in September to study electrical engineering. Rather than work in tesco I was wondering if anybody has any advice for what is best to do making use of my qualifications?

i can't see anybody wanting to employ electricians on a weekend only basis (with occasional weekdays), so my only option seems to be to go self employed and try and acquire some weekend odd jobs?

i don't need to pay a mortgage or anything like that, I can scrape by on £800 a month no problems.

any advice appreciated!

Would agency work on the odd days your off be an option? As you would normally get your time table well in advanced then you could let the agency know the dates you could work.

thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes agency work is certainly an option although I've never really looked into it before. Just making use of Google now to find local agencies, but are there any nationwide agencies for electricians that you'd recommend?

i guess a good starting point is for me to ring a couple and ask if I'd get much work on Saturdays and Sunday's!

I'm not really sure as haven't ever done agency work but im sure a few members will be able to name a few agency's. Will you be at Uni every day? My Missus is doing a a degree full time and is probably only at uni 2.5 days a week and the rest at home.

I would recommend that you get in touch with as many local sparks when you move to Uni and see if they want a helping hand.

As other say, Uni is hardly 9 - 5 monday to friday!

I think when you get to university , and all the people you come into contact with, you will get all the work you need when they find out you are an Electrician.

You might be able to get some work in local theatres if you don't mind taking the regs with a big pinch of salt and learning some new skills.
Most unis have their own stage crew organisation doing uni events and outside jobs.
