Hey guys just thought I'd share a worrying find today..........

Called to a property with loss of supply after their smart meter install.

Tails from meter to ccu still live, so I remove the cover to find the Live tail loose inside, I also notice weld and burn marks on the neural busbar millimeters away...........:whatchutalkingabout

I find out later the smart cough expert cough had manage to pull the tail out fitting the meter and he had blown the mains 60Amp fuse! So about 100Amp fault??? Not only that to remedy this he wiggles the tail until he could re-energise without blowing the fuse leaving a loose tail in the board live! :banghead:

Serious safety concern to me, what about you?

Probably will become a typical story, given that sparks are hardly going to be considered for that work and the midweek trained marvels are going to be let loose on them

I am concerned to hear these intrusive contraptions are actually being installed

What area are they these legalised liberty taking, Orwelian data gathering monsters being installed ?

Had similar lately, new smart meter fitted, tails not quite long but the guy just pulled on them then off he goes. He was like a whirlwind, in and out. Wondering why theres no power, investigate to find tails pulled out of main switch of 3 phase DB...nice work...

They just rush round trying to get as many jobs done in a day as they can...

??????

yes it is a concern.
meter fitters are hardly the last word in technical skill , and training for this line of work is only 2 weeks i believe.
you'd have thought with authorisation to work on dno supplies theyd undergo regular assessments & monitoring ? maybe not lol.

only reason their installin em is caus they send a signal into the blue yonder if theres an interruption.....
...........lol.....lol...

According to a friend that has recently retired as an area manager from a DNO, they are lucky if they get 3 or 4 day's training. He was always getting complaints about the sub-contracted meter fitting companies work.

Long gone, are the day's when meters were generally fitted/changed etc, by the boards own qualified electricians that were nearing retirement, or electricians that were on light duties due to medical condition or the like. Now, it's another case of the Ex Tesco shelf filler wanting a career change!! lol!!

I suspect that they really couldn't give a f345.
Them and a large %age of the population are getting by on crappy wages, so they get the job as quick as possible and on to the next one. Do they care if the meter etc has been tampered with, I doubt it.

I have seen a council office worker who had previously only ever worked behind a desk doing this, his sister was "going" with a bloke working at the power company and a few nods and nudges later he was put onto a 4 day course at head office, handed in his notice at the council and was started the next week....he was blabbing that he got paid more, was on £11.00 an hour and said that he had landed on his feet as he was getting extra for each new meter installed, I think it was something silly like £50 for each one and he only had to do 3 a day...

He had a handfull of old tools that he got given, a fluke multimeter from his sisters boyfriend and a plugtop tester, as well as a perspex visor and a van....and was telling everyone how he had just got his personalised seal crimping tool with his ID number on it a few days before...

This is clearly a breach of Meter Operatives Code Of Practice Agreement (MOCOPA) which requires the operative to ensure that the incoming tails to the consumer unit are sound and tight. The breach should be reported in writing, with any documentary evidence obtained, to the local DNO Chief Engineering Manager who is responsible for the registration and approval of all meter operatives in that area.
