Mr Curnow

I've gone back to college for C&G 2330 Level 3, I've been told by my tutor that the deadline to sign up for NVQ3 was in a month but I'd have to be employed. My idea now is to ask around for unpaid work as I think there is no other way of me getting into the trade. Would I be aloud onto the NVQ3 while working for a company for free? I really do not mind working for free as long as I am on the NVQ3. Also how long does NVQ3 take?

The deadline for the NVQ 3 in Electrical Installation is next July.

You do NOT have to be in paid employment to complete the NVQ, the only criteria is that you are undertaking "real" work and are able to meet all the criteria of the NVQ.

How long will it take? Depends on the type of work you are doing and the evidence you are able to collect demonstrating your competency. For example, you may not yet be able to demonstrate your competency in testing and fault finding as you have not yet received the training that you will get during your 2330 level 3 on the theory of this skill. Anyone can plug a tester in and press a button but you also need to demonstrate that you have the knowledge, this knowledge should be acquired during your final year at college.

I would not worry too much about the NVQ for the moment if I were you, I would think about starting this next year or ask if the college can deliver this for you free of charge. If you can find employment there may even be a way of getting this for free as an apprentice.

if i was you ild continue with your 2330 level 3 then in december start looking at all the national companies.

national grid, eon, water companies, energy companies, london underground, national rail etc etc

all start the application processes for apprentices. Theyll also pay you a decent wage while you complete your nvq level 3.

If in the meantime you find a local company to take you on then you can pull out of the application process. But it would be better to be in it and not need it than finish your 2330 level 3 and be one of the ones desperately scrambling for an apprenticeship
