any one use it to advertise. had a rep call me today and she made it look like its worth trying.

what ya'll think?

If you can put up with all the cold calls offering you 'advertising space' in a magazine for charity etc, for a cost anywhere between £100 and £500 then I suppose its worth it. I put a free ad online with yell.com and within a month I was getting atleast 4 calls a day of these so called companies trying to scam my money. If you do, do it and get cold called make sure you never say 'yes, send me some more details in the post, sounds interesting etc' as they will then chase you for money that you apparently agree'd to pay for a advert in a magazine that never existed or is printed and published about 400 miles from where you are based.

Its been about 3 months since I put my advert up and after getting so many calls and compiling as much info from these 'companies' as possible (one company even had the cheek to say he was from my local police and if I took out and advert for £495 I would get a sticker of the local constabulary badge that I could put on my van for life, and people would know I was a safe trader as I was sponsered by the police. I mean come on can you see the police who are meant to be impartial in everything start sponsering trade's men?? especially without a meeting CRB check or any kind of assessement) So after compiling all the info and passing it to the Business related crime officer at my local cop shop, he gave them a call and touch wood I haven't had any calls since.

If you can be botrhered to put up with it yes, if not I'd say don't bother. There are better ways to advertise locally. Facebook is a good one, my mates a driving instructor and he gets loads of business through facebook.

Sorry for the very negative opinion.

by yellow pages you mean yell.com, or the mini book they put through the door? i read in earlier posts you were thinking of using the local paper, any luck tony?

ive noticed alot of sparks pulling there ads out recently

i know what you mean by the cold calling. i use the local paper and im garunteed to get about 5 cold calls per day. drives me round the bend. thanks for the opinion

I took up the yell.com with a proper listing for my area and a single line in the book. Cost 510 quid for the year, which is up in May and have only got 60 quids worth of work from it.

Local paper ad costs about 35 quid a week and this is still bringing in between 5 to 6 times its weekly cost every week. I've also picked up 3 rewires from it too.

Make your own mind up, but whem May comes I know where i'll be investing my 510 quid!

Ive got ads running in my local papers and picking up little jobs, not a lot, but every little helps and everyone takes a card. So in theory I should be there first port of call if I don't tuck them up and they trust me. Up to now Ive been tipped for my work, so I now know what rates I need to be charging to try and get every job out of my locals.

Yellow pages the mini book is the answer to your question.

There's people who like the net, like us lot and there's people who like paper form. You need jobs from all different angles if you get my drift.

Years ago I had some real good contacts for my own work, but found it easier to earn a good living on site on price.

But now I'm turning back the years and going to mix it up with both, because its getting really hard out there as you know.

Yellow Pages/Yell was a total waste of time for me.
I paid £360 for a small block ad, and got 3 calls from it all year - yes really!
Those calls went on to 2 jobs, of which both were under £100.
Total waste of time and money. As noted above, you will get hundreds of calls from Insurers, advertisers, and even people asking for a job.
I really wish I hadnt bothered with my ad.

Thomson local .........1 job in the year

£500.00 spent, £1000 back GROSS.

Local paper, large advert FANTASTIC!!!
Own crappy web page and google adwords FANTASTIC

I am really busy at present, I have cut the yell and thomson advertising and am putting the £1000.00 saved into a larger add in the paper and another local magazine.

Hope this helps?

The advertising cold calls are happening as they see us as suckers/soft targets, they know how much we have paid for adverts in different places and are hoping that we are willing to spend the same or MORE again with them, they will get a % of that in their bonus package...
Then theres the phonecalls that say they are a survey and start asking for your banking details as part of the "survey" as they want to check out if they "could save you money" what they really mean is that they are phoning from India or somewhere equally far away and that their call centre contract is with some hookie business back here in the UK, they want your Bank details so that they can set up a direct debit you didn't ask for and fleece you silly before you know its happened...straight into a caymen bank account..

I found it a waste of time and money

I did too.

I found that it generated very little work, but a whole shedload of rubbish calls where folk were trying to sell me something.

The best advertising for me at that time (1980's - 1990's) was one-liners in the free papers and word of mouth. I also bought myself a pack of plain postcard size cards & printed them at home on my computer with all my details and whenever I was doing a job in a street I's put one through every door in that street. If there was a corner shop nearby, I'd ask the shopkeeper to put one of the cards in the shop window.

As for the Yellow Pages, I rang them & told them to take my advert out.
