Hi folks

I've just identified as cause of lighting circuit tripping in consumer unit a low volts ceiling light with laride transformer taking in 240V 50Hz and output 12V 60VA with load 3 LEDs rated at 2.4W/ 300mA. This unit is only a few years old and not much used. What kind of lifetime should be expected for these?

The transformer now has continuity between input line and neutral. Certainly explains the trip. I don't know about transformer failure modes. Is this one typical? Are there any source for a replacement transformer anyone would recommend?

Thanks

A transformer's life is indefinite provided it hasn't been over loaded or allowed to over heat by enclosing it and not giving enough free air to dissipate heat.

Thanks

Kindof what I thought, too.

This one, with the stated load (or previous 10W halogens) is used to light the stairways for as long as it takes to walk up or down them. Its installation is flat to ceiling in a vented enclosure, presumably of lamp-makers design.

Is it a transformer or a driver? If the latter, are you above its minimum load requirements now that you have fitted LED lamps?

From line to neutral resistance is exactly nil ohms

Interesting. Sounds unusual since it seems it was very lightly loaded. Not much you can do I suppose other than buy a replacement unit.

Unless you fancy removing the covering and checking the windings.
