URGENT - Please advise if this wiring is correct?

I have a tenanted property which I bought about 7 years ago.
I went into the loft because the pull switch when turned on was causing a short.
I called an electrician but he turned out to be useless.
In the bathroom we have a round bathroom light, pull cord switch, an extractor fan and an isolation switch.
The bathroom fan has never worked.
Please see the photo. The photo shows what I think are 3 lots of 3 Core Cable going into a bathroom pull cord switch. That can't be right?

Please advise.

Three core cable, meaning “twin and earth”?

If so, then it’s normal. Will be live & neutral supply from mains or previous switch, L&N out to next switch and a switched live and neutral up to the light.

Bit of a squash in a pull cord though.

If anything, it could also be L&N supply in. End of circuit, no L&N out…. The switches live to the light, and a 3core and earth to the fan…. Carrying a permanent live, a switched live and the neutral.

If the electrician can’t figure this out, he needs to go back to college.


To assist, would it be possible with the power turned off of course, to unscrew the covers from the switch, isolator and fan and photograph the terminations.

A lot of the time, a fan not working is simply the fan itself going faulty rather than a wiring issue, but you would need test equipment and the knowledge to use it to be sure.

Thanks, I will obtain the images and forward to you. Mind you all the videos I have seen and if I open my pull cord bathroom switch, theres only one connection coming into it and I believe its from the Consumer Unit. The more complex wiring appears to be done where the light is located. Hence, that pull cord looked wrong to me.
