Water appearing in washing machine when run kitchen taps plumbing advice

Water appearing in washing machine when run kitchen taps Hi there!
When I run hot or cold kitchen tap, clean transparent water slowly appears in washing machine - this water smells - have to scoop it out! Not sure if issue is installation - washing machine is sited not far from sink (live in flat and kitchen small). Here is a picture of the piping work under my sink - any ideas why the water starts to fill in washing machine when taps are on? Could it be the inlet or drain hose? When I do a...

W-plan pump run on plumbing advice

W-plan pump run on Son recently moved into a 20 year old house with what appears to be a W-plan system using, I think a Worcester Bosch Greenstar gas boiler
He noticed that the rads were getting hot when the HW was on and I diagnosed the 2 position diverter valve (not 3 position valve!) was well and truly seized in the open position.
Having replaced tis expensive (£150) item HW now gets hot and the rads dont......until the cylinder thermostat temp is reached and the valve moves to the CH...

Electrician Boiler Fault plumbing advice

Electrician Boiler Fault Boiler Fault

I’m hoping someone can help with this boiler problem. Couple have just moved into a house that has a Grant Vortex combi boiler. The current setup is a two channel programmer, turn the heating on at programmer & it calls for heat at stat that then returns to CH terminal inside boiler. Hot water from programmer on is wired to DHW port in boiler. Now it all works fine heating wise when it’s only the CH that’s on at the programmer but when the DHW is...

Unidentified noise in party wall plumbing advice

Unidentified noise in party wall Hi 🙂 Please can anyone help to identify this noise in the wall between me and my neighbour? Complicated but will try to explain.
It occurs every few (7 - 10?) weeks, when it does it's very regular, every 21 mins plus a few seconds.. it's like a donkey - "squeak honk".. varies in volume. Continues for a few days like that, then stops. Sound file attached. Is this familiar to anyone??
It's only audible upstairs, in my bedroom. The noise emanates from a...

Shower screen reinsert problem plumbing advice

Shower screen reinsert problem Hi

I had to remove the glass panels from this quadrant shower cubicle and I'm struggling to get one of the screens back in place properly. The small glass panel is supposed to slide into the wall channel, and some holes in the side of the channel (inside the cubicle) should align with some holes in the frame attached to the glass panel, allowing for some screws to go in and securing the frame in place. My problem is that the frame isn't going deep enough into...

shrewmouse plumbing advice

shrewmouse Hi everyone nice to meet you, i'm Cath, homeowner, being driven mad by an unidentified noise in the party wall.
Am waiting for my grandson to come and help me create a sound recording and will then post a description on the diy thread in the hope that someone here may be able to help identify what's happening. Any advice as to what format the sound file should be? Thanks 🙂

Balancing Radiators Thread. plumbing advice

Balancing Radiators Thread. How To Balance Radiators

Tool List:

Radiator-bleeding key
Lockshield valve adjuster or adjustable spanner
Screwdriver
Digital thermometer or multimeter with thermometer function

1. Make sure all the radiators have been bled. Turn off the central heating and allow the radiators to cool.

2. Familiarise yourself with the valves. The lockshield will usually have a push-on cap or one that is secured with a screw through the top. Remove it.

Do I need to bother with traps at all?? plumbing advice

Do I need to bother with traps at all?? I'm building a new off-grid house. I have a septic tank exclusively for WC's, but the bathroom has its own independent stone & gravel soak away which is straight into the ground and not connected to the septic, and obviously not connected to any main drains etc. Therefore, no sewer gases etc. Which makes me think - in this specific case do the bathroom fittings (sink, shower, and bath) even need traps??

Do I need to bother with traps at all?? to...

Looking for a cradle (Ideal Standard)!! plumbing advice

Looking for a cradle (Ideal Standard)!! Hi All,

I'm desperately looking for a cradle (the assembly that connects the flush unit to the cistern, in case I'm using the wrong terminology) for a discontinued Ideal Standard 2 button pneumatic system (Part number: SV93467). I really can't find it anywhere.

Can anyone recommend where I could get hold of one, or even have one available for purchase?

Thanks in advance

Seeping pipe connection to Loft Cold water plumbing advice

Seeping pipe connection to Loft Cold water Had a problem with hammering noise coming from pipes (triggered by hot water, though it could be eased if you put the cold water on).
Went through everything i could, checking joists etc. Problem appeared to be the ballcock in the loft cold water tank.

Ive replaced it but for the life of me i cant stop seepage out of the nut for the main connection. Though ive only tried
1. Going tighter, getting to the point i'm not sure i can get it any...

Water hammer/noise from pipework at night? plumbing advice

Water hammer/noise from pipework at night? I attended a Job where the customers complained about noisy pipes more often late at night bur sometimes in the day. While I was there, there was no issue but the combi boiler was set to preheat and they said they usually put the washing machine on late at night.

With their permission I turned off preheat to the boiler and added a mini shock arrestor on the cold feed to the boiler near to where they were hearing the sounds. I also added a mini...

need a new shower but my hot/cold pipes are reversed! Hi All
I need some advice as to a replacement power shower and there are a few problems
I have posted a photo showing the old unit ( a ShowerForce 2000 ); it has supply pipes which run down from the roof and into the left side of the unit as shown

The big problem is that the hot and cold are reversed ie the hot is on the right and cold on the left
I have heard that it is possible to get a reversed cartridge? that can be fitted to a...

Traymate Shower tray plumbing advice

Traymate Shower tray Hi guys,

This is my first post so apologies if this isn't the right section for the post.

I'm a qualified plumbing and heating engineer with nearly 20 years experience under my belt.

I have an issue with a (client supplied) TM Traymate shower tray/trap and wondered if anyone else has had similar issues? As you can see from the pictures, it has cracked directly inline with one of the two fixing screws which retain the entire trap. The shower tray has been installed...

Found a plumbing course but not what I expected? plumbing advice

Found a plumbing course but not what I expected? Hi all,

I posted a question back in 2020 so rather than bringing that thread back up thought I'd start a new one. I've been in a few jobs since I was made redundant back in 2020 but still in IT. I am still thinking my calling is in a trade and Plumbing seems to be the one I'm drawn to the most, I've managed to gain a little more DIY skills as in putting up more curtain poles in bedrooms, fitting a new basin in the downstairs bathroom (no...

Indirect (Boiler Fed) Megaflo Doesn't Stop Heating plumbing advice

Indirect (Boiler Fed) Megaflo Doesn't Stop Heating Hi,

I noticed yesterday that when my HW is on, that the boiler runs constantly... I even tested this morning after it ran last night so no water usage overnight and it ran for 30 minutes before I turned it off on the controls. No dripping from Tundish.

My suspicion is the thermostat in the Megaflo which presumably is demanding heat continually. The boiler temp is 60c so it isn't going to overboil the water the cylinder as it reaches an...

Capping off redundant pipework question. plumbing advice

Capping off redundant pipework question. Hi all.

I done some work for someone a few years ago and I've been getting paranoid that things haven't been done the right way.

I capped off a gas cooker supply that was no longer in use, left the redundant pipework capped off at the appliance isolation valve in the kitchen.

I'm getting paranoid that if someone later down the line for some reason, was to drop the pressure in all of the pipework, say during a boiler service or for a boiler...

Name That Training "Provider" Scam - Share to help the cause We haven't had many of those training provider scammers posted about on the forums. They must still be knocking around. We're now not hosted on a .co.uk or in the UK and our head office isn't in the UK either.

Breakdown of costs to become "oil" qualified & OFTEC registered plumbing advice

Breakdown of costs to become "oil" qualified & OFTEC registered Hi all,

Please can you advise on the above, estimates of costs would be fine.

I realise it depends on my competency / skill set & experience to a degree. I've no "oil" experience to speak off apart from a couple of boiler installs back in the 1980's! I'm classified as Category 2 in the "prerequisites for OFTEC assessments"

List of costs:
1. Specialist tools & equipment (recommendations of brands would be useful as well)...

Fixing the upright of a shower enclosure plumbing advice

Fixing the upright of a shower enclosure Fixing the upright of a shower enclosure

Is there anyway of getting a good fixing, where the upright of the shower enclosure meets the continuous edge of large vertical porcelain tiles? I'm concerned about the possible cracking of tiles with holes drilled so near to the edge, and also the possibility of leakage. Laying the tiles horizontally is going to be so bitty. I'm quite prepared to make a payment for anyone who can make a good workable...

Electrician Help with understanding NVQ Help with understanding NVQ

Hi.

Ive recently been verbally offered a role as an Electrical Service Engineer and the company understand my current knowledge, experience etc.
They have offered to train me up, put me through my NVQ and progress with the company.

Whilst this is exciting, its also not the type of electrical work I had set...
