Increasing porch floor height prior to tiling Discussion Thread

Increasing porch floor height prior to tiling

I'm planning on tiling my porch, and the tiles and adhesive will take up around 13mm of height.

The porch is currently back to the concrete slab, which is around 70mm below finished floor height. This means making up 50-60mm of height. This seems too thick for bonded screed, and too thin for an unbonded screed. I was thinking of using chipboard or plywood, but from what I understand this isn't an ideal tiling substrate. I do have some...

cut ties with the contractor and now have a badly done, half finished bathroom Discussion Thread

cut ties with the contractor and now have a badly done, half finished bathroom

First time poster here.
For some context, I have a (mostly finished) tiny home with some really shoddy finish work. We’ve cut ties with the contractor and now have a badly done, half finished bathroom. The contractor set the shower/backsplash wall tile with liquid nails instead of the proper product, bizarre choice I know. And since trying to pry them up would ruin the tiles and destroy the waterproofing...

[ElectriciansForums.net] Tiling Rates Per Square Meter - How much does tiling cost? Discussion Thread

I know this is a hard one to answer. But just as an approximate guide for those searching for how much a tiler costs, and landing on websites such as my builder who seem to be selling tilers for pennies, how much you been charging either day rate...

Tile Adhesive Compatible With Fish Ponds (non toxic to fish) Discussion Thread

Tile Adhesive Compatible With Fish Ponds (non toxic to fish)

I want to install some tile adjacent to outdoor fish ponds. This will be installed on wood, so I want to use S2 (high deformability) adhesive. Which type of adhesive would be least toxic to the fish (Type C - cement based, Type D - Dispersion, Type R - Resin). Also, which particular manufacturer/brand would be suitable for this application?

Water underfloor heating and epoxy grouts Discussion Thread

Water underfloor heating and epoxy grouts

Hello,

I did some reading here and there, but the opinions seem to diverge at some point and I am not able to translate the info to my particular question. I have a water underfloor heating (thermal pump and so on) installed and am currently having the bathrooms (and not only) done. I am wondering about getting the epoxy grout (PCI Durapox premium), as there seem to be 3 opinions that sound equally reasonable to someone like me (zero prior...

Help needed for wetroom plan Discussion Thread

Help needed for wetroom plan

Hi,
Can anyone please give me some advice. I have an old bathroom and I want to turn it into a part wetroom. It is the flooring that I need help with.
Currently it has wooden boards with haphazard ply on top. My plan is to:
1. Remove ply.
2. cut a hole for shower tray.
3. cover floor (excluding the hole) with cheap backer boards.
4. Level the floor with waterproof SLC.
5. lay electric UF heating.
5. Fit the tray.
6. Tile it all.
Does this seem like a...

Large Format Tiles / Score and snap Discussion Thread

Large Format Tiles / Score and snap

I need advice on score and snap cutting of large porcelain tiles, lets say, over 1000 mm long and at least 10 mm thick. I am thinking of buying a large score and snap cutter but not quite sure. On my last job I had to use angle grinder to cut such tiles, that was time consuming and very dusty.

Ideally, I would use straight cutter but have doubts. I tried cutting such tiles with my montolit that can cut up to 600mm or so and it was not good at...

Blotches / Stains / Dark Patches appearing on White Tiles? Discussion Thread

Blotches / Stains / Dark Patches appearing on White Tiles?

Hi

I have noticed dark patches appearing on some of the white tiles in my shower / bathroom. The patches appear blueish/purpleish and are quite noticeable. Just wondering what the cause of this is likely to be, and what can be done to remediate? My initial thoughts are that there is water behind the tile (possibly from decayed grouting) but have never come across this before.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks...

Fix-a-floor. For fixing tiles with voids. Discussion Thread

Fix-a-floor. For fixing tiles with voids.

Got to use this fix-a-floor stuff today. What a load of... rubbish, and that's being kind.
One loose tile 300 x 300 and the grout cracked a bit.
Drilled eight 4mm holes in 6mm grout lines. Cut the nozzle for a snug fit. Injected it in.
Only about 5% went in, while most just came out the same hole. What a f'ing mess.
Ended up lifting tile spent about a half an hour cleaning up then relayed with adhesive.
Stuff has the consistency of melted ice...

Gap between ceiling and tiles Discussion Thread

Gap between ceiling and tiles

Hello, we’ve just had a bathroom tiled. A 1.5cm gap is at the top, between the tiles and ceiling, which has been grouted. I wondered if this was normal? I think it looks slightly odd and worry that such thick grout will crack and look bad over time. I wondered if there was any way of fixing it? Many thanks!

My son and tiling training. Discussion Thread

My son and tiling training.

Hi guys. My son, 16, not enjoying school or college has been working with me for a bit of money doing some grouting, sealing, cleaning and the odd bit of cutting(supervised of course). Talking to him today we mentioned apprenticeships. This is the first time Ive heard him interested in maybe learning about tiling but for the life of me I cant find an apprenticeship for tiling in West Sussex. Is it true that for such a specialised job that we do there isnt...

Trying to source an obscure size octagonal tile

I hope you can help we are trying to source (for a match) some 300mm by 300mm matte white taco tiles with a black insert. We are finding this hard as a lot of the websites we find seem to have 200mm by 200mm or 316mm by 316mm.

I have attached some photos for reference below. We have one box we have found in the loft and it specifically says 30 cm (on the ripped off piece of cardboard that was near it!). Although when we measure they...

Wall grout for shower Discussion Thread

Wall grout for shower

Hi,

Just wondering what the general consensus is with grout for a shower. I have epoxy grouted the floor but now that I'm about to tackle the wall I'm unsure which way to go with the grout. I know epoxy is the best overall grout to use for a bathroom or any kind of wet room, but my conundrum is that we want a pure white grout, not shady or and kind of light grey finish which I am led to believe is mainly the case with all white epoxy grouts because of the...
