Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA Surge Protector mounting question

this question is for the usa guys.

can this device be mounted outside under the main disconnect that is under the meter base? it seems no that the main breakers are required to be at the meter base so that in the event of a fire the fire department can cut power to the house faster.

anyway i had one of these

Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA Surge Protectors mounted inside next to the main panel but the new house being built after our house burned down now requires the mains to be at the meter base. the main service panel will be inside the garage but on the fire wall so i will not be able to just start chopping holes in that wall to mount one of these. it is kind of pointless to have it inside the panel being i would not be able to see the led's for the units working good still.

i'm thinking i may be able to mount one of the under the main meter base breaker panel so it will be mostly protected from rain and or snow but not 100%.

the meter base base is going to need an attached box that will have 4 spaces along with the mains that will be protecting the main wires going to the inside service panel. if it will not be able to withstand the elements being installed under the meter base breaker panel is there some type of box that i can attach to the main breaker and has a clear cover so i can check on the surge device ow and then?

or might i be able to do this? i back garage that has a sub panel. can this Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA Surge Protector be mounted on that panel that is back there? or do they need to be as close to the power lines as possible? i hope i explained that good for you?

The SPD that needs to be purchased should be the outdoor approved NEMA 3 and not the plug in type which is not approved for wet environments. It needs to be installed as close to the main breaker after the meter as possible to prevent surges. If you install it on your sub panel then it is not protecting your whole house. The whole house SPD should have 2 black wires, a white wire and ground wire and it requires no box to install it in because it is already approved for damp locations. The SPD will have a specific information on what size breaker that should be added. Hope this helps and good luck.
