    Without Internet

I was looking at a thread about how many devices people have connected to their WiFi and got to wondering. Firstly how reliable are your internet connections ie how often do they go down and generally how long for? Secondly what is the impact on your life if your internet at home fails. Are the...

    How many devices?

My (African) internet is still on copper line and it's capped at 100 gigs per month. When my kids are at home there's 10 devices that connect to my ADSL router and for the six months of the year they're not here there's 4 devices. I have a few devices such as our new TV that want to connect but...

UK Running an additional armoured cable to outdoor building.

As above, sounds like you may overload the garage supply and 10mm SWA cable is expensive and might be completely unnecessary. Rather spend the money on getting a decent sparky to give you good advice on a circuit design that will work without overspending and without it becoming an annoyance due...

Can anyone identify the model of this siemens fridge?

It's doubtful you'll be able to identify the model of the fridge just using the info on the compressor. There's always a sticker with the make, model and electrical details somewhere but sometimes they're in a very hidden place. Try removing the drawers in the fridge section and check at the...

Insulation resistance results weird on actuator circuits

It is a bit odd. It's not an essential service that's got a high impedance IT earthing arrangement for first fault tolerance is it? I'd suggest just accurately record all the IR test results and monitor their trends over time.

    Fluke t5-1000 electric shock

I'm assuming it's not been subjected to moisture or excessive condensation in the van maybe? If not I'd probably open it up and do a visual check of the internals then just relace the leads as a matter of course.

Garden lights... IP68 + vermin protection

If it's underground I've always favoured SWA with good old fashioned resin joints. I would make a 3 way resin joint below ground, no enclosure necessary and would have used a short section of HO7 cable through a diagonal drilled hole into the bollard. It's swings and roundabouts, if there's a...

When do Neutrals need to be switched?

All good thanks, still trying to retire but still finding myself busy as ever. Hope you're well.

    Electric screwdiver

I'm the opposite, I also have an old and a new version and I prefer the newer one. I like the settable clutch on the newer one and also like the button option, if it's small screws I find you have to push the old one too hard sometimes to get it to run.

When do Neutrals need to be switched?

Our local regs (not UK) require both L+N to be switched if earthing arrangement is TT.

why the new fluorescent lamp feels lower brightness?

Fluorescent tubes also have 'triphospher'' versions. If the old tubes were triphospher versions they would have been up to 20% higher lumen output for the same wattage, they would also have had better colour rendering. Also as James mentioned the new tubes may be slightly different colour...

    25mm swa armour for cpc

Price. SWA comes in many armour variations, there's aluminium armoured (which isn't SWA in the purest sense), steel armoured and also combination steel armoured with varying numbers of copper armour wires to decrease the armour impedance. You just specify according to your application. If you're...
