Hi people,

Have a new luxury B&B to design and install and thought I would get thoughts on the design.

Internally it will have a dining area, hall, toilets and, 6 en-suite bedrooms (1 upstairs)

This is going to be a royal pain to wire as mostly is vaulted ceilings with baths located within the rooms!

My initial idea is to supply communal areas via the incoming 3 phase DB and then feed a 25Amp SP sub main to each room. Then wire 20A socket radial and 6A lighting from local DB for each room.

was thinking of using earth shield cable for the sub mains so no rcd required then rcd main switch in local DB or RCBO's for standard T&E final circuits.

Thinking of using local DB's for ease of wiring due vaulted ceilings and then each room will be independent of each other.

Any ideas etc would be much appreciated.

Thanks Adam

Tazz, you seem as if you do hotels etc- i'm waiting for building control to confirm but they seem to suggest on drawings that emergency lighting is required throughout including the bedrooms. never seen this done and don't really like the idea as the nice green glow at night? also all rooms apart from 1no ground floor and 1no 1st floor room have a door leading directly outside as well as to corridor? so risk assessment would be low on initial thoughts. Any thoughts/recommendations?

Regarding use of floor, this cant be done as said block and beam with 100mm selotex, underfloor heating piping and screed which would be a nighmare to try and fit wiring in without thinking about ambient temp etc. Also underfloor being installed at mo with screed next week so no time!!

IMO the builder/client has to come to some kind of compromise with you with regards to cable routes like building a boxing or something.

The job is mine to do, no other quotes being obtained! just got to decide how best to do it and a budget cost so they have an idea- nice little job!! if only all of them were like it! also had this on my desk for about 3-4 weeks but been that busy haven't had chance to look at it until now really! you seem a bit negative dave!

Most Hotel refurbs I worked on, the electricians feed each room with a 6mm T&E, each with there own cu board. Skirt rail along the bed wall, containing sockets on a 20A radial, telephone, tv and internet. The lighting cables also run in skirting rail and buried upto each 2-way switch.
Problem as you say, is the 4x4 trunking in the corridor feeding the rooms

lee- I think i'm going along the line of air con, submains etc in swa then I don't have to stick to safety zones and rcd requirment and then should be able to fit t & e wiring within saftey zones as required with rcd protection etc.

Tazz, I see what you mean, only problem with this one is its high end boutique b&b with different lighting ambiance,(several switches/lights) also baths are within rooms so limited locations for sockets etc so no chance of having trunking of any kind anywhere apart from a cupboard out of site! trunking would be a dream!

This sounds a nightmare, as apart from feeding rooms, you have data, tv, telephone and fire alarm...all to be run within the building. The rail skirting is what most use in hotel rooms, quick and hides all cables within skirting. As for feeding the rooms, only suggestion now, would be secondary lowered ceiling in corridors, allowing fire alarm, em lighting and feeds to be hidden

its all vaulted ceiling so cant drop suspended ceilings as have oak beems etc on display! right pig of a job with so may obstacles to get over! budget price will be good one!! date, etc not to bad a no zones to follow and think I will sub fire alarm out and get my cables in first so they have the headache!!

Why not have a site meeting and come up with a solution. You are an electrician and not a magician lol.

Just re-read the OP's post and it is an existing 5C SWA so presumably a 3P supply. For 40A and 150m you are seeing 6.6V drop or 1.65% of 400V 3P...
