Can anyone recommend me a decent 1m sds drill bit, I've managed to shear a few of them off at the chuck.

Do you mean in length?
Sounds like your technique is suspect if you're breaking them on a regular basis.

I always go for Hilti, whenever I can.

cheers where do you get hilti ones from?

any tips on technique? I normally put the drill bit against the wall and pull the trigger?

Apart from the obvious starting with a shorter bit then progressing up to the longer bit and not pushing hard but letting the drill work at its own rate you can't really go wrong

Technique is everything sam400 ... pilot and drill a hole to the same diameter or better still slightly larger with a standard length bit so when you use the 1m length it only has to drill half the distance and has less change of locking and sheering .... cheap bits may also be a factor, who's brand have you been buying?

I got a 22mm 1M SDS bit b from toolstation around three years ago. It was a cheap bit but needed at last minute so got it I did. It has been battered in that time and is still going strong.

Have never sheared any off. What diameter bit you having trouble with?

Can't go wrong with Hilti quad tip drill bits.

My armeg bits are bomb proof. I know they're dear but got stuck, bought them, never looked back!

Get them in most wholesalers.

Cant knock Hilti, Armeg I've never tried them but I am tempted to buy them next? I've had a 1m - 18mm Makita for the past 3 years and it is has good as the day I bought it. It has had some right abuse but keeps going and nothing has stopped it yet, well apart from that re-bar once but it still does the job.

No point in buying the cheap ones, 3 pack from a shed for a tenner! Leave them to the DIY-ers and buy a quality brand as above.

Do you lads ever bother to sharpen you SDS Drills or do you struggle on until they're totally knackered then bin them??

They can be sharpened with a Green Grit grinding wheel something like this:

GRINDING WHEEL GREEN GRIT 125: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

This is a soft wheel (softer than what you have on your grinder normally) and you need it because the drill bit is Tungsten Carbide which is very hard. It is harder than glass and will cut glass.

The rule for grinding metals is Use a soft wheel for grinding hard materials and a hard wheel for grinding soft materials.

Copy the angles on a new(ish) drill and with a bit of practice you'll have you drills working like almost new again.

If you want to go one better, use a diamond lap to get an even better edge on the drill.

In my original trade we used Diamond Lapping machines for jobs like this which cost a shedload so you could use something like this:
