Didn't take a photo. I should have. Typical, I tried to change the light fitting DIY jobbie gone wrong. I really wanted to say something sarky or witty but he was a nice bloke so I didn't.
Mock up of the seven way choc block below. Bless him! He was over the moon when I got most of the rest of the circuit working too!

All the right cables..... but not necessarily in the right order.... or the right connections

How did he expect the light to work when the wires weren’t connected to anything.

Reminds me of a tale I’ve mentioned before where homeowner confused a yellow single switchwire with the cpc. (Conduit system) And split 2 blacks thinking they were sw and n.... even helpfully taped one the blacks.... just to confuse me.

My mate bought a house and asked if i would give the electrics a once over. First thing I noticed was lovely brass type light fittings everywhere so i made a bee-line to check for earthing. There was no earth but the guy who had fitted them got the switch wire and neutral in the correct holes so they all worked. It was a three plate system which left him a bunch of reds that he decided to connect into the earth pin on the body of the fitting which was actually in my hand as I lowered the rose to check! Every single light in the house had a live body. As my mate had young kids I decided to express my annoyance to the previous owner who just denied everything saying they were already fitted when he bought the place.
