Whilst it's clearly aimed at the DIY market, i.e. is not a calibrated, professional tool, it does a lot for very little money, and with a 2-year guarantee, you can't go far wrong, so long as you're not expecting precision. Good reviews on Amazon.

There are cheaper ones available;

I've had one, not the above, for over 20 years mainly for measuring air temperatures but have used it on cable connections in Commercial buildings and found hot spots.

I used something like this eears ago to check for loose connections on a some pretty heavy sub mains on a big site. There had been a fire in one of them, so everything got checked when it was loaded up.

I don't know if it'll just sit in my van and never get used.

I have one of these https://uk.farnell.com/fluke/fluke-ti9/thermal-imager-160-x-120-15cm/dp/1700079

great piece of kit for checking control panels and DBs. Also really handy for finding joist under plasterboard. Worked a treat on my bay window for putting the curtains up !

i have an ethos one. had it 5 years. cost about £20. works perfectly. main use is electrical ( hot cables/switches etc. and checking the freezers are @ -20.

Has anyone any experience with these?

Keep being tempted, not exactly something that will break the bank but could end up paying for itself in a few hours on a breakdown.

Occasionally you find a warm object (36C) that keeps moving - Reflection of your bare arm , on some shiny surface -at just the right angle .
(Those ghost hunters have a lot to answer for)
