Wylex Module Unit Compliance BS5486

Hi guys,

I have Wylex BS5486 60Amps circuit board in the house. I want to add:
1. a gang of sockets (no existing sockets in the loft, there is a light switch which turns on/off 5 lights in the loft) in the loft and
2. new wirings for two new Chandeliers lights in one of the room.

The electrician has told me that in order to complete a certified work, the circuit board need to be changed as the current circuit board doesn't comply with the new British standards since that board was installed. Alternatively, he mentioned a additional safety equipment can be installed to make the new work compliant.

Is this correct information as the work will be costing me significantly more than I expect?

basically the electrician would need to fit RCD protection to any new works. 1 way is to upgrade that board for a current compliant board. another way would be to add RCD (and maybe breaker/s) for the new works. for the extra costs involved, I'd replace that board with a 10 -12 way RCBO unit. gonna cost around £500+ (more if SPD fitted) but would improve the installation immensely. those old breakers have had their day. could be on the way out if they have been subjected to overloads or faults. what price do youput on your family's safety.

What do you suggest the approximate cost of the 12 way RCBO using with SPD fitted (parts+fitting)? Thanks for your earlier response. It was really helpful.

in the region ofn £650 - £700 depending on make of equipment. you'd fit RCBOs to fulfilcurrent requirements, leaving a couple of spare ways for future expansion.what i mean is, a 12 way board you'd fit 8 RCBOs to cover presemnt needs, , then add as and when needed.
