Hello, first and foremost I'm not an electrician, just a DIYer.
We bought our place almost a year and a half ago and have been doing updates since. I upgraded the oven which was from 1995 and it was hardwired in. After hardwiring the new oven in using the colors as my guide (red and black hot, white neutral, bare copper ground), the display came up as "bad outlet" when I turned power back on. After looking at my photo of the old oven wiring and checking the voltage across the wires, here is what I came up with:
Black and white = 240v
Black and bare copper wire = 120v
White and bare copper wire = 120v
red and any wire = 0v
So correct me if I'm wrong:
Black and white = hot
Bare copper uninsulated= neutral?
Red = ground?
I was considering putting in an 120/240 outlet but won't do that at the moment. Looking for solutions if there are any where I don't have to redo all the wiring....
Is it possible/safe to attach the bare copper wire (neutral) to the ground screw and the red wire to the neutral screw since the metal strip connects the two screws? This is how the previous owner had it for 25 years. My reason for doing it that way would be that the insulated wires all have ring terminal connectors, and the neutral bare copper wire does not and would be positioned away from the hot wires at the ground screw. Do I have to worry about the neutral bare copper wire being uninsulated?
Is it possible and as simple as an electrician coming in and switching wires at the circuit breaker so the red and black are hot, white is neutral, and bare copper is ground?
