Discuss Smoke alarms in caravans in scotland in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

That’s a good question, and unfortunately I don’t work in the caravan industry anymore.

Some caravans are built to a “holiday home” standard and some to a “domestic” standard for actually living in, but as for the new Scottish rules, I don’t know.

I will ask one of my old contacts.

I'd say they should be fitted. Given the cost how would it look if someone was killed and the owner wanted to save a few quid (Scottish quid of course)?! Risk assess it and you'd not be able to not justify fitting one.

Would these be open plan

Speculating ,Above in the main area, I assume you can't fit smoke ?

Separate closed off bedroom I suppose an extra ionisation

That would be my stab at the rules anyway

Prob wireless interconnect , 10yr battery only type if available

Did I recall someone saying 10 yr battery only alarms are allowed in Scotland

I got a reply from someone who works for Victory leisure homes and ex- willerby holiday homes…

I can’t say off the top of my head, but there is a BS standard for smoke detectors etc in static caravans. All the new ones we got had the same as a house. Hard wired interlinked, smokes in hallway and lounge (if separate room to kitchen), heat in kitchen and carbon monoxide wherever the boiler was.
It’s just that they’re not following the new Scottish rules, as they’re not classed as a house in their definitions, but they will have fire detection fitted in the factory. (Under their own standards)

When I worked on a park, the fire safety was that caravans had to be a certain distance apart… (6m comes to mind) which was an increase of a previous regulation of 5 and a bit… so many parks had caravans too close together and had a number of years to alter their layout to comply.
Another rule was not to store anything under their decking. We had one fire where the owner had a ciggy outside, dropped the butt which fell through the gap between boards and started smouldering on some scrap timber leftover from building the deck. There was also paint, antifreeze, other outside cleaning equipment all underneath.

This is it though…. To put one following the letter of the law, so to speak… would be a smoke in the hallway outside the bedroom door… then a heat...

Personally I won't do fixed price work unless there is a clear spec for the job including things like smokes, data, TV whatever else the customer...
