AFDD are manditory from the 28th of March on fixed final circuits using current carrying equipment not exeeding 32a People opinions on this. Also if a house doesn't have an afdd what would you code this as on a condition report ? Basically every Circuit would have to be an rcbo afdd at £130 a breaker that's alot of money per Circuit.

I just can't see any justification to fitting £135 arc fault breakers

Standard 8-10 circuit board swap with labour and arc fault breakers, looking at 3 grand with fitting

Leaving practical application to one side, AFDDs cost a lot of money as demand is low. If they became a mandatory requirement, it is without doubt that prices would drop by a significant percentage within a few months.

This shouldn't be news to anyone in the industry as it's exactly what happened with every other development, over many years; for example MCB, RCD, RCBO, SPD etc

How many members here have actually seen arcing result in a fire that didn't self extinguish before the flame left the accessory/consumer unit or whatever where it started? I can only think of one example and that was that national trust property that burned down. You know, the one where they saw smoke coming from a distribution board, no visible flames, but didn't switch it off, or attempt to stop the fire in any way... The one where electricians got blamed for not tightening a factory made, and sealed with paint, connection.

Well that goes against price theory, if demand is low the price should be, demand high then the price rises.

I remember fitting some RCBOs at my own house when they were literally just come onto the market and they were only £20-25 way back then. These were MK ones.

If demand rises then they sell more and so the price comes down. Expensive things are the ones that only sell in limited numbers.

I get where you're coming from, but that would apply when a surplus of goods builds up due to low demand or high demand outstrips supply. In the case of AFDDs it's unlikely that manufacturers were churning them out on large numbers when little demand existed, but still have significant development and tooling costs to recoup. At this time AFDDs designed to fit UK distribution boards are a niche product, developed to meet anticipated future demand.

I did a pre ammendment webinar with NAPIT, they have seen the final release but were not allowed to show what it was but was told AFDD has been rained back from the public comment version and now will only be required in certain circumstances, so suspect high rise buildings and maybe HMO's etc, might even include wood framed houses...
