It looks like a cut odd bit of VIR supplying an old circuit within the house?

I'd say it looks more like an old metal conduit with TRS cable in it, part of an old electrical installation rather than an incoming supply.

I would be more concerned about the dodgy earth clamp around the incoming mains cable.I don't think that's an official connection.

It's not great, especially when there appears to be a proper connection directly above it on the lead.

Agree, that does not look like a service cable, but an original internal circuit.

Thanks guys. I know the house was rewired in the 70s, so I guess this was probably a route for downstairs sockets or something originally, that that rerouted when they rewired it.

Seems strange they wouldn't have just used the existing conduit, but being such a long time ago I guess I'll never know why!

Chances are they wouldn't have got anything like the required number of cables through it.

Unless they were replacing the original installation with a completely identical one (ie same number of sockets in exact same locations and same design of circuit) then reusing a bit of old conduit like that will likely have been pointless.
