Periodic Rewirable Board

Doing a periodic on some rewirable boards, obvoiusly no rcd protection, Would you reccomend to the client the boards be changed?

This is a great subject to raise as you'll get a number of replies.

IMHO if there are "garden" sockets then that is a code 1, if there arn't its a code 4

I'd recommend you read the Best Practice Guides

For a PIR this does not contain recommendations only details / explanations of dangers and of dangerous non compliance with BS7671. Recommendations are only in a covering letter.

No RCD protection is likely as Murdoch say code 4 for non high risk locations and code 2 for high risk locations (outside and bathrooms).

When I come across rewirable boards I dont so much recommend renewal of board but try to educate client about safety and always point them to the ESC website so that they can see that what I am telling them is not just a sales pitch. I am never forceful or chin rubbing when talking to customers about improving their electrics but try to get them to see what is required and leave them to decide. Usually with clear discussion and ESC handouts I achieve results.

I agree with bigbreakfast, bearing in mind you are testing to the 17th edition, this does not preclude installations to a previous edition which would not be to current standards although under the standard it was installed is still fit for purpose. In your covering report I would suggest the guidance suggested by bigbreakfast

Dont know If people have looked closely at the Wylex type of rewirble fuse boards? Without the screw on cover over the fuses there is exposed live parts on show under and on top of the fuse carrier... about 2- 3mm
If the fuse cover is missing (not the carrier but the 4/6 way cover) and the fuses can be seen, this goes against reg 416.2.2
If the cover is there and can be undone without a tool then again I think this goes against the same reg.. what you guys think?

If I find one of these coupled with dodgy supply to the garden shed (no RCD at source), I will go for a CU change.

Brilliant pieces of kit in their time,after all the years, there are still many left that, with the addition of an rcd will likely outlast a lot of the junk sold and installed nowadays ( not withstanding re fitting the missing covers)and still provide safe instalations unless they have been abused of course

There was an incident reported with one of these...I think a wire coat hanger dropped onto the coverless CU and touched live parts,and someone got a shock.
I always code these 1 now if the fuse cover is missing..even worse if the fuses are'nt pushed fully home...Agree also that with the older wylex covers with the plastic finger screw live parts can be accessed without tools by removing the cover and slightly pulling a fuse....code 2 for that if the cover is in place.
