Hi Guys & Gals,

So I got this pressy from are lasses dad a few weeks ago. Bless him, he thought I could use it on my jobs. Any way it looks to me like an early IR tester but I could be way way off. The red button has "ohms" and "Mohms" on it. Trouble is, the only reading I can get from it is, 1Mohms. I get this when I press the "ohms" button, even when I connect the leads to say a metal spoon to short it out, it still shows 1Mohms. When I press the "Mohms" it doesnt do owt, even when connect to the spoon. May be the battery is no good, I dont know. The writting on it says "Conforming to BS1259:1958. (wow thats old). Its a " Metrohm model 500v. The case is a stiff leather and at the minute, it has a small square 9v battery connected to it (prob knackered). Now, obviousley, I would not use this thing on any real jobs but I am interested to know abit more about it. So Im looking for any info, probably from the likes of, malcolmmansford, engineer54, oldtimer, topcat etc. Now, in no way am I being ageist but it does say 1958, so I dont think the younger ones would have a clue (I could be wrong).

So have a look at the pics and see what you think.

Thanks Jay for the agest remark! You have there an intrinsically safe megger (IR tester). It is for testing in explosive atmospheres so it will not generate a spark and blow everyone to kingdom come. Probably cost you about ÂŁ1000.00 or more to buy one today

Edit:-At my age i don' know what i am doing up at this time of night! And tomorrow i don't start moving till about midday and then it's time for my nap! :wheelchair:

Why not? I have one similar...well actually a few years older and I still use it. Fit a new battery, check the fuse is okay and see if it works.

If you don't want it you can donate it to me :) I'll even pay the postage.

I knew I would get a bite if I used the right bait but are you taking the peeeessss???? I dont think the father inlaw paid that much for it, I think he said it was a car boot sale buy. So how does this thing work cos I cant get it to short out!! Would this be because the battery is low or even not the right one??? Have you used one of these before???
Again please except my opolagies, I will offer to service your zimmer frame/chair lift for a discount if you can give me more info. lol.

Now, if I knew how it worked, I may think about useing it but I dont. I might try a new battery and see if that helps. Now, IF tc is right and its worth ÂŁ1000 + then I may just hang on to it a while longer, (Cha Ching). Besides, if I got rid of it, are lass would kick my assssssss!!!!! lol

No i have not used one before.

The reason it's not working is that it is probably knackered like me!

Google intrinsically safe insulation resistance tester and see how much one costs!

By the way, how long have you been potty trained? Lol

I have a couple, my main use one does 500 v d.c. I also have one that is capable of out loading 1000 v d.c. for over one minute, anything bigger I tend to hire when needed.
