I was wondering (like you do) how they would supply power to the tent they use in the great british bake off, if you assume that the cookers they are using are roughly 15Kw with diversity thats 26.5A per cooker, there is at least 10 of them plus sundry other electrical appliances, presumably there is going to be a gurt big cable out the back somewhere, has anyone ever had to supply something like this before? and yes, I do have too much time on my hands.

or maybe a portable solar array.

Outside events almost always use Gennys, unless it's a regular location and is prewired.

I've been involved in providing temporary heating for buildings and it's far cheaper and simpler to use gennys, even if the fixed supply is close by.

There's not usually enough spare capacity in the right place.

We did a fixed supply for a breast screening unit in a supermarket car park once, 32amp 3 phase supply and it cost £17k to get it to the car park, overgound, underground screwed to the wall.
100mtr run from a suitable board.

Why was I thinking exactly the same thing?
also I am the only person who goes to the theatre and wonders how they do certain things, like how they time the lights so correctly, where do they do when they go into the floor, is the spotlight programmed to follow a sensor on the person?
my list goes on and on
Im far more interested in the 'behind the scenes bits' than the actual show, and then get wrong of the missus for not following the story

Having worked in the sound and lighting industry (more noise than lamps though) I am completely unable to enjoy any live music, theatre, musical or anything of the short! I spend the whole time wondering about what kit it being used and how it's being run!

I went to Phantom of the Opera a few years ago and embarrassed the missus by breaking the "no photography" rule so I could get a shot of the theatre sound desk!

I was in Vegas and managed to get behind the scenes there! Almost every hotel has their own lamp making shop, making their own neon signs etc. Also most of the signs/ lights have another sign behind it, therefore if a bulb pops they can swivel the sign around to change the bulb. Apparently they don't like if any of their signs are off. They even have sensors and CCTV to ensure all is working smoothly.

I started off in film and tv lighting, they had 150KW twin gen sets on the back of trucks all the cables would be run to the truck where they plug into sockets. So wouldnt be a problem powering the cookers. They have lighting that use's more power.

For instance we used to have 18KW lamps that used to have ballasts on wheels, they where very heavy. We used to test them before loading them onto the trucks and get too close to one of them and it will set your pants on fire, no shell suits allowed!!. There was even a 24KW one!!

In theater's or events, lighting that follows the person is usually controlled by someone, manually (or was), they know where the person is going to be from the weeks of rehearsals that went on before opening. There can be a lot of planning that goes into lighting a stage or event, positioning lights etc. For instance when you see events such as boxing and there is a far shot of the ring and the lights above the ring shine at the camera like stars, well this is all setup before hand, aiming the light at the camera till you get the desired effect.
