Cable Joining

Hi every-one,

called to an house late last night who had just had the gas board there for a gas leak and the call-out guy,s had drilled through a wall and hit the ring-main supply and knocked out all the power,the cable was proper damaged and in a cup-board wall, i am asking if there is a pref for joining twin & earth together as i only had connector blocks with me 30-amp and joined up with this to re-store the power for the customer, the son who was there was a joiner and was going to box the area in, in the morning, the point is,is this fine as it is as can,t find anything saying connector blocks can,t be used or should i have used crimps etc instead which prob be neater job ?? :dizzy2:

It makes me wonder when I read posts like this.
•Has this person been to college.
•Why don't you keep a good selection of jb's, crimps, etc etc in your van if you are doing call outs.
•Not everyone has had experience with every type of cable but t+e!

I was in shock I thought this was a wind up, I bet he's in the yellow pages, it's like asking how do I clip this cable, how do I fix this to the wall, how do I join two pieces of trunkin together, how far should they be spaced apart, how tight do I screw this terminal on and on the questions keep coming don't any of these learn anything in the workplace, and these are being let loose in people's houses, I can understand people sharing experiences and asking about strange faults they encounter but ..........I give up now, I've had enough............................

silly question or not in my honest opinion no connection (crimp, block, wire clamp ,or wire nut) should be made without a properly grounded metal enclosure.

Got to really agree with posh sparks ... who goes out to a drilled cable without the correct gear, why hasn't the OP got basic spares, even if i had run out id drop by the wholesalers and restock on a few items before going out.... the OP has now put himself in a position that if anything did happen and the owner got a shock or even killed re' his quick repair (however unlikely just speculating and it does happen)-he would have seen him up for manslaughter.

Why cant plastic be used or am i missing your angle here, you've just eradicated 75% of the joint box and enclosure market there by suggesting it needs a metal enclosure?

i suppose a plastic box could be used.
but the reason i use metal boxes is because i bond them to the ground conductor, (as per nec and nfpa code)
if a live conductor does comes in contact with the box the current will return through the ground wire.

with single phase here in the usa.
120/240 volt most ckts (live legs ,neutral, and ground )
the ground conductor is a redundant return circuit for safety reasons.
(i get really irritated at the twits who cut the ground lug off of plugs)

eh?...
you use whatever is suitable AND compliant...dont you...that doesn`t necessarilly mean a metal enclosure does it...
