Hi every-one,

called to an house late last night who had just had the gas board there for a gas leak and the call-out guy,s had drilled through a wall and hit the ring-main supply and knocked out all the power, the cable was proper damaged and in a cup-board wall, i am asking if there is a pref for joining twin & earth together as i only had connector blocks with me 30-amp and joined up with this to re-store the power for the customer, the son who was there was a joiner and was going to box the area in, in the morning, the point is,is this fine as it is as can,t find anything saying connector blocks can,t be used or should i have used crimps etc instead which prob be neater job ?? :dizzy2:

eh?...
you use whatever is suitable AND compliant...dont you...that doesn`t necessarilly mean a metal enclosure does it...
plastic boxes themselves are non conducting i use the metal one purely for safety reasons.

soldering provides a solid electrical and mechanical bond and i agree with that wholeheartedly

I don't know anybody who wants an enclose shoved on the wall where there was once nothing.
Best way to repair twin & earth is replace the whole section or my preferred method is staggered crimps with insulation tape then heat shrink on some outer sleeving . IMHO

i suppose a plastic box could be used.
but the reason i use metal boxes is because i bond them to the ground conductor, (as per nec and nfpa code)
if a live conductor does comes in contact with the box the current will return through the ground wire.

with single phase here in the usa.
120/240 volt most ckts (live legs ,neutral, and ground )
the ground conductor is a redundant return circuit for safety reasons.
(i get really irritated at the twits who cut the ground lug off of plugs)

Are sorry forgot your from over the lake.. different reg and guides... the way i would look at it is ive found so many loose, corroded bonds to metal boxes over yrs that it actually can create an extra hazard where as a suitable plastic box eliminates this senario altogether... but we have a choice and no specific guidance to which method to use ... metal only usually if extra mechanical protection required amongst a few other reasons.

thats ok the way i look at it we are here to show a different perspective and foster better understanding.
even though im here in the states i find the electrical procedures and methods of the uk and other countries very fascinating

My way is similar to yours - staggered joints, heatshrinked over etc. - but I use solder because I'm old (I learned to solder from my Father in about 1960) and am unsure about crimping solid cable.

If it is solid core cable I personally don't like crimps on it. Don't trust them. The solder and heat shrink would be a preferred option for me.
