Why does everyone seem to use the earth bar in a CU as the MET, what's happened to the old 4way or 8way earthing terminals, are they now a thing of the past in domestic installations, it doesn't seem right to take the water/gas bonding conductors etc to the CU IMO

It also makes testing and inspection a much easier exercise to have an external MET block!! Sod all that messing around inside a tight CU, to disconnect a main earth or bonding cables just to test then having to try and reconnect them again!! lol!! MET block everytime for me, for a domestic CU...

I almost always fit an external MET on domestic jobs, for the above reasons. A couple of inspections ago the Elecsa chap thought it was a bit unusual and couldn't understand why I was doing it 'cos there was a perfectly good earth bar in the CU!!

Just shows how inexperienced these so called inspectors are " Elecsa chap thought it was a bit unusual and couldn't understand why I was doing it 'cos there was a perfectly good earth bar in the CU!! " As far as I'm concerned the CU earthing bar is for the individual circuit cpc s lol

It's totally acceptable to use the CU earth bar as the MET, however I have never done it (not even once). External MET every time. Seems some folk nowadays are trying to strip every conceivable expense out of a job to offer it as cheap as possible.

or there is this.

I don't see the big deal. In a domestic situation the earth bar of the CU can act as the MET as it is usually provided with a couple of bonding terminals as well as an earth. If you struggle to get a 16mm earth and several bonds into an earth bar THEN it would be appropriate to install a separate MET. Neither option is right or wrong - it depends on the application.

Indeed it would be. But that would mean having 2 things to disconnect instead of one. More margin for error. Of course, any diligent spark would...
