ive had the brushless makita for less than 2 months.

went to change from drill+hammer to just drill and thought it was odd nothing happened.

then put gave the selector a little wiggle to see if i hadnt quite got it selected and the bastad fell off incne hands.

the section that changes the gear fell out when i had a look and it seems there is a hole in the gearbox.

ive taken it back to shop today and makita are picking it up early next week and hopefully will get replcement instead of refurb

unless i got a dodgy one don"t use 18v bl makita sds drills

replacement for sure. sounds like bad luck tbh mate. I quite like makita and never had any issues with em!

Must admit I used to use Dewalt but then saw a hell of a lot of trades, whose use is more frequent and use of power tools more strenuous, using Makita gear, I borrowed a combi and impact and I am now a convert. Got myself a load of Makita gear and wouldn't go back, I have the brushless impact and it's a fantastic bit of kit. My SDS however is not brushless. Hopefully you just got a bad batch

I purchased the same drill about 4 months ago, got to say its a brilliant bit of kit. I have every confidence it won't let me down regardless.

think you have just been unlucky, used Makita stuff for the last 18 years now for cordless stuff and never had a problem with any of it.

i think your right mate and it was a bad batch.

the gearbox is totalled on it. no where near as much oil in the gearbox as i thought though as nothing really came out till the linkage between selector and gearbox fell out.


the drill ive got bhp 451 has had some right hammer and is works just as well as when i first bought it.


the guy in the shop who deals with returns has never seen this problem before so i think its a manufacturing fault

You have been that " 1 in X amount " that have had a problem with Makita. Have every faith in their tools, get her repaired and should last you years.

My brushless 18v makita SDS is a right beast so hopefully not a common fault.
Would go as far as saying its my favourite drill! Not very often i reach for the corded one now unless using it for more than one socket or chasing.

I have never had one problem with a Makita drill and that's the truth, I own several and for the money they are unbeatable IMO, there's no doubt there are one or two better makes on the market, but not at the price the Makita is, great kit, you must be Just unlucky.

hey title worked and got a lot of views.

the drill is being replaced/fixed free of charge definitely so can't fault there service at all.

I am a Bosch ----- myself. Had the 36V SDS for four years now and still going strong. Need to get a new 18V combi soon and maybe looking at Makita partly due to the 13mm chuck, but also having had a play they seem decent.

Only other Makita p/tool I have is an angle grinder; had to return the first one due to the on/off switch falling off after approx 1 hour. Straight swap and no probs since.

Milwaulkee tempting but not convinced. Hilti - to costly to get nicked!

i think its the 458 you want to look at.

its got higer torque than mine and is a newer drill.

unless you want a drushless combi
