I need to start buying some tools. Which brand is best? Where is the best/cheapest place to buy them? And as I can't afford to buy everything all at once, in what order should I get them? Screwdrivers 1st, then pliers & cutters, strippers & crimpers, then testers? Or what?

best way is to build up slow with decent gear. maybe not top of the range, but go for CK, draper with cutters/drivers. buy cheapish things like hammers chisels etc. have a look on toolstation's website.

Suprisingly I got a set of screw drivers from Aldi (CK look alikes). Seem OK, yet to give them a good thrashing but for the money they certainly look the business!!

p.s. Im not some cheap skate that does my shopping at Aldi, I just happened to get lost in the carpark and stumbled into the store by accident

I used to have great kit but it kept getting stolen, I buy B&Q home range now lol, My hammer and long nose pliers cost me a couple of quid each I think, they have bright red handles and have lasted a couple of years or more now, I don't cut corners on the screw drivers though, I have a 1000 volt set from CK and they have lasted years.

This is the best electrician's tool.

I'm lucky in that I very rarely get anything nicked.

I tend to buy mid range hand tools and higher quality power tools.

Fancy toolbags and boxes look pretty but wont pay for themselves :)

2 sets of drivers 1 high quality insulated and 1 cheaper day to day set.

Cheap tools are ok if you are near to somewhere you can get replacements from.

In my case I can be 40 plus miles from anywhere and even then I'd get humped on price.

Sometimes my expensive kit sits about doing nothing for weeks at a time, but when needed it's worth it's weight in gold.

I would say buy things as you need them and buy the best you can comfortably afford at the time.

Power tools decide on a brand and stick to it that saves on individual batteries and chargers.

Personally I avoid cheap critical tools like the plague. If you factor in time lost and replacement costs when they break, they are suddenly not so cheap.

I have ck screwdrivers and knipex pliers/snips.

I'm a big fan of ck, wiha, Irwin & stanley.... Don't have much that isn't one of those brands.

try ffx.co.uk. I find them pretty cheap for tools.

Yeah he is likea love struck puppy for some reason, tongue hanging out and completely in another world.

Haha, tell me Mike - you were my age, would you be acting the same? :p

I'm just gonna have to find my hide-out for when she turns out to be Brian Blessed.
