    Explanation of SELV vs PELV?

Thank you very much for that very helpful video clip which has helped me to get my thoughts straight. I would be really grateful if somebody could look at what I think of the relation between these three and perhaps give me an example of FELV? SELV, PELV and FELV all share the common...

    Explanation of SELV vs PELV?

Hi All, The separated extra low voltage system excludes any connections to the earth on the extra low voltage side on the basis that such a connection would import a potentially high voltage on a protective conductor should a fault an earth fault exist on the low voltage side. PELV then...

    Advice on TABLE 41.3 please?

Thanks for the excellent information. I realise that the 110 volts relates to 55V between the line and centre tap of the output of the transfer providing the reduced low voltage. Table 41.6 for a Type C breaker at 50 A does specify 0.10 ohms. This is about a quarter of that for the same breaker...

    Advice on TABLE 41.3 please?

Table 41.3 provides max Zs values based on Uo = 230V. Can this this table be used to assess Zs for Uo = 110 v ac on a reduced voltage system. Perhaps reducing Zs pro rata? Thanks

FELV providing both basic protection and fault protection

So with SELV and FELV it is really the separation element that provides the fault protection, the removal of any return path when touched under fault conditions.

FELV providing both basic protection and fault protection

So SELV also, by regulation 414.2 also has basic and fault protection as far as I interpret thyese rules? Jonel

FELV providing both basic protection and fault protection

Thank you Richard. This is the way I understood it from BS 7671 - If it WAS FELV then it did have both basic and fault protection. Thanks

FELV providing both basic protection and fault protection

Hi All, Regulation 411.7.1 states that the provisions described for Regulations 411.7.2 and 411.7.3 are applied for a nominal voltage not exceeding 50 V ac or 120 V dc then this combination is known as FELV. Does that mean then that if and installation is defined as FELV then it IS protected...

plugs and unswitched socket outlets used as isolators!

Thanks all. If it's unplugged it's isolated! I have no problem with that. My question was about when load current was still being drawn. That has been explained, thanks. I do understand, and the regulation did say it, it just bothered me a bit. Pulling out plugs while they are carrying a load...

plugs and unswitched socket outlets used as isolators!

Table 53.4 shows that plugs and unswitched socket outlets can be used as devices for isolation while carrying load current!. Functional switching can also be carried out in this way as well. Is this really a safe procedure? Am I interpreting this table incorrectly. Thanks Jonel

Do electricians actually need to have the 17th Edition?

Thanks to all who replied. I think I have the picture now. Jonel

Do electricians actually need to have the 17th Edition?

Thank you. Now you can see what you are dealing with! I'm getting a good picture now though. Jonel

Do electricians actually need to have the 17th Edition?

Thank you very much for pointing me to the ECS Card. You correctly illustrate that it does require a qualification in BS 7671. This is very useful to me but it doesn't get me anywhere with my initial problem because, the way I see it, the ECS card is a sort of equivalent to the JIB card. And...

Do electricians actually need to have the 17th Edition?

Thank you. I'm not doubting you in least (I'm probably the least knowledgeable in the forum). It's just that the documentation for either of these two organisations makes no mention of such a requirement. On my website I was hoping to say something regarding the 'essential requirement for...

Do electricians actually need to have the 17th Edition?

OK. But a Domestic Installer (belonging to a scheme) only has to have a copy of BS 7671, not certified in its contents. Actually it also seems that a CPS scheme only requires a copy as well. In fact, I've just had a look at the JIB card requirements and these seem to be mainly NVQ Level 3...

Do electricians actually need to have the 17th Edition?

Yes, that is the opinion I now have. I started looking at this topic from the wrong angle. I had this idea that it was a requirement for completion of the apprenticeship. I appreciate that electricians 'dip' into those areas of BS 7671 that concern only what they are working on. But there is no...

Do electricians actually need to have the 17th Edition?

Thank you for your very prompt reply. No, of course I wouldn't let a motor mechanic do this work. But that seems to be what IS currently the state of the industry. From what I can gather, the CPS only require you to hold a copy of the BS 7671 and the same for a domestic installer. It's very...

Do electricians actually need to have the 17th Edition?

Hi All, Just recently I have had my interest in electrical work re-awakened because I have a grandson halfway through his apprenticeship and I asked me for help. The electrical technology was OK as very little of that has changed, but BS 7671 was new to me and so I got stuck into it. I...
