    Another Carillion in the making?

What strikes me is that the culprits are not just the inept management that take on work that they have too little expertise in, but the government departments who are all too happy to give them this work! When will the government realise that the civil servants (or prison service or whoever)...

Default forum response to DIY enquiries vs. skills shortage

To the qualified electricians on the forum: The default response to DIY enquiries on how to do stuff seems to be "Get an qualified electrician in, it's too difficult for a DIY'er to do". Given the skills shortage within the industry, is this a reasonable response? Is there another way?

Currys refused to install my daughter's cooker, but....

If the voltage really was 117V then the installers have done the correct thing and potentially avoided damaging the oven. Looking on the Currys website there is nothing stated abut what happens if an installation cannot be performed for a valid reason, so your daughter will have to ring Currys...

Could someone check this wiring diagram?

You've provided a key for the colour-coding, but omitted labelling the red conductors.

installing 110v and 240v socket in the same circuit

What voltage does the Band Saw motor require? You talk about a 110V plug, but have drawn a picture of a plug that might be 110V or 240V.

    Electrician career?

If you have a look at Thomas Nagy's videos on youtube, you will see what a domestic and commercial electrician does day-to-day. Thomas doesn't do a lot of industrial work, but industrial work is basically the same as commercial but with higher loads, motors, more three-phases electricity, and...

    shower cable and sockets

Faced with the same problem, I have installed a two-way consumer unit at high level and fitted an MCB to create the final power circuit.

    Bathroom extractor recommendations

There is no problem fusing down a fan if you select a fused isolator for the fan. Fused Isolators are available in three pole models specifically for extractor fans.

Tools stolen and ways of tracing them back...!!!

My DeWalt kit is marked with a black permanent marker in a number of subtle ways that are designed to make it easy for me to identify my property in any online photos.

    Cutting 5 inch ventilation ducting

Wrap masking tape around to get a line to cut to and use a blunt cross-cut handsaw. Really quick, and cheap because I bet you've got an old saw at home. I keep my old wood saws for exactly this purpose; and it works on most diameters of pipe. If you've got a lot to do, it would be worth rigging...

    3Ø 100amp Question

Changing to gas heating might just shift the problem from an undersized electrical supply to an undersized gas supply. Improving the insulation in the studios might allow smaller electrical heaters to be specified, but kitchen appliances might be a bigger problem; the students are likely to...

    Special Purpose Machines

Marconi's suggestion would also mean that the client could at a later date move the machine to Brazil or sell it with its converter into other markets, so this could preserve more value in the machine. I think it is a good suggestion.

    Under cabinet lighting installation

I replaced our existing lights with Philips Pentura 240v led strips. Very easy to fit and produce a nice light. The units plug together and provide an even light, even at the join between two units.

    electrical work for beginner.

Get down to the Electrical Wholesalers from around 7am when the sparks are picking up materials for their jobs. Ask for permission from the Branch Manager to hang around for a hour to give your CV to their customers and repeat until you have a job. Dress smartly as though you are ready for work...

    Minimum call-out fee gripe

I think £70 is an ok price for south east England. When they say "That sounds expensive", you could try saying "Well, that is the cost for me to get to your site and be there for up to an hour and I fix most problems in that time". If you want a call out, you could also try saying your price...

Intro and question about my current electricians advice on Underfloor heating

He might be resisting running the cable around the perimeter because he has run out of cable, or just because it is more work. Do you know whether he is a member of a Competent Persons Scheme for electrical work? (The work he has been doing sounds like it would need notifying under Part P of...

I'm not a qualified electrician, but offer the following advice in the hope it is useful, and in case you don't get much encouragement from the other members... I have checked the information below, but would encourage you to double-check everything! If you want to work for yourself, your...
