    Plug -in Water Heater

Plug as you show with earth on the side but adapter not matching (it would suit a two pin shaver plug). Cable clearly marked as three core. 1591795203 No class 2 symbol as far as I could see.

    Plug -in Water Heater

I came across a type of water heater that I haven't seen before. It has a 3 core flex attached and fits into the sink where an ordinary tap would usually go. I had to fail it as it had a two-pin continental style plug fitted and was being used with a unearthed adaptor. My question is would it...

    Testing an Uninterruptible Power Supply

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on the results I got from testing a 1000VA UPS in use in a small business. With the permission of the owner I had switched-off and disconnected the PC it was intended to protect. Firstly, it passed all tests except the differential leakage test. Is it normal for...

Ok, I'll stop worrying then :-) Thanks!

    Printer in-rush current

Ok, 900w seemed a bit high to me, especially as only two of them were that high. I've not seen anything on the news about the office burning down though :-)

    Printer in-rush current

5 amp fuse, they drew about 15w after settling down. The plate specified 400w, the two odd ones measured around 900w during start-up whereas the others between 300-400w.

    Printer in-rush current

I'm no longer on the site so I can't retest at the moment. I did retry one of them two or three times with a pause between, the results were consistent.

    Printer in-rush current

I recently tested 10 laser printers, all the same model of a well-known brand. I always do a load test and two of the 10 exceeded the wattage shown on the specification plate as they started up. I didn't fail them as I could see no sign of any problem such as overheating and they were both in...

    Advice on surge protection

The MK spd socket might be an idea, especially as it beeps when it's failed. Maybe I should get a quote from the local sparkies and see what the score is regarding an overall spd. Thanks.

    Advice on surge protection

I've got a fair bit of computer equipment at home which I need to protect as best I can. I use surge-protected extensions and these have been needed a couple of times. At least I think they have, the warning lights have come on, presumably because they've diverted a surge once too often. Is it...

    Additional meters for garden studios?

I don't know. I think its going to have to be something the electrician looks at, is this the sort of thing most electricians would be able to assess?

    Additional meters for garden studios?

Would this concern would apply to the existing configuration?

    Additional meters for garden studios?

I have a client for whom I do PAT testing. She has a couple of studios in her garden which used to be holiday lets, they take electrical supply from the house. As she's now letting them out as long term lets, she'd like to install separate meters and asked me if that was possible. As a lowly...

Lapcabby - how do they do it?

Doh! You're right. I've just measured my laptop charger, input rated 100-240volt 1.7amp and it's drawing 0.1amp while powering the laptop. So might "power 7 management" be snake-oil? Thanks by the way.

Lapcabby - how do they do it?

Used in schools where there's a need to store laptops and keep them charged up, the example I've seen has slots for ten laptops and their chargers. The chargers plug in to what appear to be fixed 5-way extensions and the whole lot is powered via one 13amp plug. Given that chargers are rated at...
