    Tinned copper cable!

I understand the procdure for PIR. There has been additions all over the house, single copper core to tinned copper and the is no CPC in the lighting circuit with class 1 fittings in most rooms! I was going to suggest a re-wire with the ammount of work needed to bring it up to standard, lots of...

    Tinned copper cable!

I have recently been to test a property that has tinned stranded copper cable on the socket and lighting circuits. Is this type of cable still acceptable or does it need removing and re-wiring? Any advise would be welcome.

    just a simple question

I do agree Warren it is better at the MET if available and easily accessible but unfortunately that's not always the case. Will have a look at the regs thought just to check.

    just a simple question

Wot if you you lost the main earth at the MET? Its all ifs and buts! As long as the main bonding is in place and correctly connected to the main earth so that everything is at the same potential then i don't see as it makes any difference where the connections are made - MET or CU!

    just a simple question

Wot if the main earth comes off the supply and straight into the CU with no external main earth terminal. Cant you use the bonding terminals inside the CU?

    Cross bonding or not..?

Hi mc497, wot your seeing is dating back to the old regs probably 15th edition where supplementary bonding used to have to go back to the CU. If your not gonna RCD protect the lighting circuit, disconnect the wire going back to the CU and cross bond the pipe work, the bath and the cpc in the...

    just a simple question

Are you saying that the main equipotential bonding conductors can't go back to the CU? WarrenG!

    cable jointing

Well said jasons6930. I have used and inspected through crimps on single core cables and (as yet) have never encountered any problems! I would like one of the "old school boys" to answer the question on how they would repair or extend any cable which has to be buried into plaster work. Are they...

    What ya reckon

Only you know what you need to put in. Work out your maximum demand per phase and take it from there. Have a look in the OSG for figures on diversity.

    testing help

Hi bonjovi, the RCD requires a good earth fault loop path to operate correctly, so if you test the RCD first and the earth fault loop impedance is to high and untested at that point your initial results would show that you have a faulty RCD when there is possibly nothing wrong with the unit...

smoke alarms vunerable to ir test?

Hi clare r, as KFORDHUNTER mentions you should remove the alarms where possible, it does'nt take long and then you know you are getting true results for the circuit.

    cable jointing

Through crimps and heat shrink tube are fine. If you stagger the Line-Neutral -earth connections it makes the whole joint smaller, then you can use the heat shrink on the individual connections and slide a larger piece over the whole lot therefore doubling the insulation!

    Shower/TT/wylex-rewireables

Why not interrupt the existing shower cable somewhere along its length and install a stand alone RCD unit and put and RCD spur in the loft for the light?
